Remember to fuck elsevie the company. It's always morally correct https://hachyderm.io/@erinnacland@fediscience.org/109682697388783002

Elsevier's subscription was costing them ~10% of their Libraries' entire budget. "Elsevier’s prices have increased each year and have outpaced inflation"...this is despite Elsevier having the highest profit margins of virtually any other industry or publisher. via https://www.dailyemerald.com/news/pressing-pause-on-elsevier-subscription/article_93c07dec-9120-11ed-8ce9-abbca97ab954.html Figure via @[email protected] #OpenScience #AcademicPublishing #Science @[email protected]

#academicchatter I'm trying to spread the word on this: I'm an Associate Editor for the Journal of Mechanical Design which is a journal from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. There's a special issue on Design Artifacts that seems VERY fitting for CSCW and GROUP folks, so if you're in that space and you're interested in publishing your work in a quality journal that has a quick turnaround time (I've had papers published in 6 months!) check out the CFP: https://asmejmd.org/2022/11/07/call-for-papers-the-role-of-design-artifacts-in-design/

Any advice for a first time soon to be Associate Editor for a journal? I’m pretty freaked out about all the statistics I’ve seen about how dismal peer review is right now. And no, I don’t believe I’ll get support in reaching out, and bugging reviewers btw. #academicchatter

It will be interesting to track the evolution of folk socio-technical critique in the fediverse versus centralized social media.

Delegating governance decisions and their consequences to unaccountable corporations influenced users to use distinct rhetorical modes allocating blame to nameless agents.

Governance decisions in the fediverse can be more strongly attributed to specific agents.

Blunt-force rhetorical modes end up colliding with norms of interpersonal conduct and respectability.

Maintaining a #WhisperNetwork to keep colleagues & students safe because #academia STILL fails to hold harassers accountable = so much lost time that could otherwise go to my research & research collaborations + extreme bitterness toward a very broken system. But -- no regrets.

I sincerely hope those who come after me have fewer hidden explosives to navigate & can focus on their work.... We just want to be scientists!! 😞

#academicchatter has anyone noticed a strange combination of pressure to be in person for meetings and events mixed with general apathy, the assumption that things will be online/virtual in your departments and colleges? It feels like we’re on the precipice of one giving way to another. I mean I do understand both sides of the argument, but wish we’d do all one or the other otherwise it’s just fragments of interaction that isn’t satisfying to anyone.

To all the #ttrpg #dnd players out there thinking about DMing for the first time and are nervous. DO IT. Just do it. Your first game wont be your best game but you can't get to your best game until you get past your first one. yes the first game will be weird. You'll make mistakes. But that's how you learn. If you have good players they'll be kind and forgiving.

Just go for it!

Mastodons could adapt to live in many types of environments, from tundra to tropical jungles. They often organized themselves into small groups and herds.

Only very powerful druids were able to use these hulking beasts as animal companions.

A mastodon could be summoned by the conjure animals spell.

Mastodons were fairly rare throughout Faerûn, but could sometimes be found in the company of frost giants.

Mastodon

A mastodon was an ancient relative of an elephant and the Mammoth that had a long pair of tusks. They were generally greater in length than those of modern elephants. Mastodons stood at about 10 ft (3 m) tall and weighted 4,000 lb (1,800 kg). Though their attributes differed based on their natural habitat, they were generally longer in length and hairier than elephants. Their tusks were up to 15 ft (4.6 m) long, meaning they could attack opponents from range. They were outstandingly strong, and

Every year, I do a group assimilation exercise to get feedback:

One interesting thing that came up this year was the level of detail in advice/feedback that I give to different students (high variance in the group). After reflecting on it, I recommended students to propose concrete plans/approaches (with the understanding that plans will change) in order give me grounding in their motivations and intuitions. This has noticeably improved several interactions thus far.
