Well, that was a lot more excitement than I was expecting as #ICML2023 Communications Co-Chair 🤣

Joy in Research

It’s hard to remember what machine learning conferences were like in person, but I think that I liked them a lot better when the field was smaller. It was easier to meet new people, to talk about new ideas in small groups of talented people who were really excited by them. The culture of the field has changed from back then, in intellectual ways that you know already, but the social ways are worth reflecting on, too. Romanticizing the past is a sorry hobby for old men. I will not do that. All research communities have a callous system at their core — I’ve written about the toxic forces that drive and derail research careers — that’s always been the case.

Years ago I had an idea for a research project that involved teaching intro programming (or even just basic computational literacy) classes to policymakers. I abandoned the idea because of how difficult I knew it would be to actually make it happen in practice, but now that I'm tenured maybe I should think about it again... Anyway I love this so much. <3 https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2022/12/28/beyer-student-artificial-intelligence-degree/

1/ Re academic vs. industrial research. While I think that it's important that state of the art research on large models is done also in Academia, it's not because industry is "bad".

I know great people in all these companies (and also was at MSR myself).

Sometimes, events conspire to tell a story.

First, the article by @[email protected] on how covid-related surveillance tech turned into "cop shit". https://apnews.com/article/technology-police-government-surveillance-covid-19-3f3f348d176bc7152a8cb2dbab2e4cc4
