As the modern state of #Ireland marks its 100th birthday, it’s an excellent chance for people, Irish, British, and others, to consider how far the country as come; originally agrarian and devout, now a modern industrial economy with a secular population. Well respected in the world stage - currently sitting on the UN Security Council - and a people who inspire joy and friendliest wherever they go.

By 1937, the state was known as #Ireland, had a new Constitution, a President, and removed all reference to the British monarch.
A formal declaration of a republic, and total breaks with the Empire/#Commonwealth would happen in 1948.
Today marks the 100th anniversary of #Irish independence from the #UnitedKingdom. On December 6th, 1922, amidst a bloody Civil War in #Ireland, the Constitution of the Irish Free State came into force.
The Free State, now officially a Dominion of the British Empire, would spend the next decades strengthening its independence, and removing British #imperialist functions and laws.
The German football team - #DieMannschaft - showed today that teams and players can still have an impact even though #FIFA is determined to crack down on protest.

The cowardice of the English team, and the 7 European FAs in general, in backing down on wearing a #OneLove armband to #protest violent homophobia in #Qatar, was in stark contrast to the bravery of the Iranian team in refusing to sing the national anthem to protest the violent actions of their own totalitarian regime.
English players faced a yellow card. The Iranian players face potentially much worse upon returning home. #FIFA #Iran #England
My heart absolutely goes out to those murdered in #Colorado. Queer bars and clubs are supposed to be safe spaces for the marginalised. The #USA needs to protect their minority communities and fix clearly broken gun laws now.
That is happened on the #TransDayofRemembrance is an even deeper cut. May all those killed #RestInPower and strength and healing to those injured.
Awarding the 2022 Word Cup to a regime like that in #Qatar was always going to backfire on #FIFA. It’s sad, though not entirely unsurprising, that the biggest outcry from traveling fans will be over alcohol sale and provision, and not over #minorityrights or modern-day slavery that Qatar employed to get the tournament ready.

#China's apparent decision to start distancing themselves from #Russia's invasion of #Ukraine is not being done out of pressure from other global actors like the #US or #EU.
Put simply, #Xi does not tolerate weakness. With the past 10 months showing that Russia's military is poorly equipped, poorly manned, and poorly led, Xi likely no longer respects Russia as a military power. They are losing to a nation considered "lesser" and siding with the "losers" makes Xi/China look bad.
