Simple living activist. Vegan anarchist. Plant person. Cyclist / pedestrian / car-free traveler. Contemplative nomad. Trying to do good work for its own sake. Wandering the USA, seeking a place where living as all of the above is socially accepted, or even just not illegal. A tall order, apparently.
@BlackAzizAnansi I remember when I worked in an office, I'd be looked down upon when I had the nerve to leave at my designated time. Inevitably, the next day, someone would crack a joke that I left early. Or, if I actually took a lunch break, I'd get another crack - 'you need more to do if you can take a lunch!'. That attitude starts at the top and works its way down until people are made to feel guilty for having a life outside of work. It's insane.

City Minneapolis NoKnock mayor Frey and Governor Walz celebrates Native Indigenous Month of May with
5 evictions:
211 #houseless relatives evicted;
174 Natives (5 Disabled Natives pushing walkers or wheel chairs) out of 211 houseless relatives evicted;
82% Natives evicted

@AlisonCreekside Someone wrote it up at Metafilter, but framed it very much as "look it these kids, it's like they never heard of the hippies": https://www.metafilter.com/199320/Post-growth-Woodstock

Which is not to say there isn't some sort of editorial edict against this stuff in actual journalism, but rather to point out that the ideological assumption of growth is so deep and so cross-spectrum that it's almost impossible for it to be discussed anywhere in any terms other than dismissal or contempt.

Post-growth Woodstock

The Beyond Growth 2023 conference held at the European Parliament was organized by around 20 MEPs from 5 parties.

"Even if the Green Deal brings everyone to the speed of the best performing countries, Denmark and the Netherlands, the EU will still blow its fair share of the carbon budget many times over.

There is nothing green about this, it's a recipe for disaster."

For the umpteenth time: the squalor, filth, and religious authoritarianism (including witch hunts) popularly associated with the Middle Ages (or "Dark Ages") were actually characteristic of early modern times from the 16th century on.

"What's a Venture Predator? It's 'a startup that uses venture finance to price below its costs, chase its rivals out of the market, and grab market share.' The predator sets millions or billions of dollars on fire chasing 'rapid, exponential growth' all in order to "create the impression that recoupment is possible' among future investors, such as blue-chip companies that might buy them out, or sucker retail investors who buy in at the IPO, anticipating years of monopoly pricing.
"In other words, the Venture Predator constructs a pile of shit so large and impressive that investors are convinced that there must be a pony under there somewhere."

@Toastie @estheria It’s established that the poor and marginalized have the smallest carbon usage. Targeting them would not only be abusive, it would have little carbon impact.

Those who can personally demonstrate that lower carbon usage is doable need to do so because that hastens systemic change.

Calling for systemic change uncoupled from practical action right now leaves the current system comfortably in place. It’s a strategy unlikely to succeed. We need both.

I think a key way the capitalist class uses cultural hegemony to maintain power and control is by constantly promoting and reiterating the myth that most people are fundamentally lazy and will not work unless forced to. Despite this idea being demonstrably false, it is an integral part of most American's worldview even if they are not aware of it being so.
Prof. Julia Steinberger reports
that for 3 full days the EU parliament hosted thousands of scientists, activists and policy-makers charting a future beyond growth, but says every single journalist there she spoke to said, "my editor refuses to print any story critical of economic growth."
She is asking people to spread the word about this.
