mastodon.art has defederated from journa.host . There are a few problematic reasons, like scouring people's content to use and quote without permission, but most notably, they've used a tool developed by kiwifarms (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiwi_Farms) to scan instance blocklists . The fedi culture generally is very anti-tabloid-journalism and obviously there are concerns about privacy, but using a tool developed by known harassers for the sole purpose of harassing is over the line.

#introductions Hi! In my day job I’m an engineer at daily.co working on webRTC call metrics. Previously I worked on data at Mozilla, backend at Etsy, and at startups.
In a previous life I was a PhD student at the iSchool at UIUC studying CSCW & Critical Information Theory. I spent S’12 at Recurse Center writing bad Haskell & transitioning out of academia back into industry.
I live in Chicago with my spouse, two gaybies (2y & 6mo) and our chiweenie, acquiring powertools I don’t have time to use.

For those wondering, Mastodon contains no “web3” or crypto technology, and significantly predates any of that. The technology deployed here is primarily ActivityPub, which has roots in tech like RSS and PubSubHubbub.

It is noteworthy that “web3” designs are absent from the Twitter emigration discussion; that’s because it’s a scam and not fit for purpose.

The minute people start talking about adding crypto to the fediverse, run. That’s not what this is about and violates its spirit and design.

reasons mastodon's "viral dampening effect" is a good thing:

👉🏻 no "main character of the day"
👉🏻 no free text searching for people to get angry at (and harrass)
👉🏻 doomscrolling is *actually bad for you* and not a thing we should be trying to replicate
👉🏻 birdsite's virality is heavily driven by actual paid advertising and bots. You think that "Explore" tab gets its content organically? really? That's not making connections between people, it's about driving sales.

Mastodon is not, and should not be, a 1:1 replacement for Twitter. But it *can* be a new place for you to make valuable connections with other human beings. #twitter #twittermigration
