Structural Engineer, coding for engineering (professionally and fun) and fun projects. Python, Fortran in my arsenal and used to work with Pascal (many years ago), Basic (many-many years ago), Java (most used but stopped when Oracle bought Sun) and C/C++ (just a bit - never used extensively). GNU/Linux only when it's my decision but being forced to use "the other" OS at work.
If you can, try to reduce how dependent you are on evil organisations to get by day-to-day

@kde

Linux has over 6% of the desktop market? Yes, you read that right - here's how

It's not a typo. Linux's desktop share is growing, according to the US government's records.

The Fediverse isn't for exhibitionists – share and be shared. Show interest, and it will show interest. Just be yourself ;)
Being authentic is important: even if it's authentically different.

"Zuck kept up his growth story with this mind control narrative for more than a decade, got caught committing a string of spectacular frauds, and then lured investors back into his stock offerings by telling the same story." - @pluralistic

Having worked with them I've met few if any investors who aren't idiots (that's why I left). We need to kill the narrative that the few idiots who got lucky are somehow geniuses.

Attached: 1 image Zuck's told investors how he plans to make back the tens of billions he's spending on AI: he's going to use it to make ads that can bypass our critical faculties and convince anyone to buy anything. In other words, Meta will make an AI mind-control ray and rent it out to grateful advertisers. -- If you'd like an essay-formatted version of this thread to read or share, here's a link to it on pluralistic.net, my surveillance-free, ad-free, tracker-free blog: https://pluralistic.net/2025/05/07/rah-rah-rasputin/#credulous-dolts 1/

I feel like randomly promoting a Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) project, that I use:

That project is OpenWRT, a Linux distro for routers:

https://openwrt.org/

This replaces the usual proprietary bloat, offering better customisation and security features. They also make money from selling their own preloaded router:

https://openwrt.org/toh/openwrt/one

OpenWRT is a member of Software Freedom Conservancy:

https://sfconservancy.org/projects/current/

There are others too, like pfSense and OPNsense, based on FreeBSD.

[OpenWrt Wiki] Welcome to the OpenWrt Project

Trade wars and tarrifs will have a negative impact on the economy in general and everyone but I have been dreaming that the perfect retaliation would be for the states to decline buying proprietary software from everyone else, relying on free/libre software instead. Now, that'd be a measure I'd support!
