I think about this a lot.

The final words from the anarchist collective CRASS on the importance of caring for yourself as an act of defiant rebellion.

It's super depressing that bad news about climate change is like, "Omg, everything is gonna die," and the good news is like, "In paragraph 28d, COP finally acknowledged that fossil fuels exist."

TL;DR: If we let Facebook play in our pool, they'll eventually shit in it and monetize our outrage.

Others have already expressed these concerns, but here goes my 2 cents... Facebook doesn't get the benefit of the doubt. They've already squandered any goodwill they've been given.

Facebook's whole business model is:
- selling our personal info and "engagement" to marketers,
- who will use that asymmetrical power to manipulate us,
- with the end goal of making us consume more.

To do that, they'll:
- invade our spaces to gather more data on us.
- change their policies when it suits them.
- use their legal & financial leverage to get their way.
- spin it all as a beneficent embrace of open standards, community, and competition in the market.

The likely result will be:
- a shift in all our timelines towards Facebook curated content.
- an explosion in growth, which will errode these safe spaces–particularly LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC–that we've worked to establish.
- extra costs and strain for server owners.
- a foot in the door for corporations to turn the Fediverse into the same cesspool of misinformation and monetization that they've turned the rest of the internet into.

Edit: @mcp thank you  for all your work for LGBTQIA.space. I know this place means a lot to a lot of people, myself included. I don't want this post to come across as adversarial to you or anyone else who cares about this community. (But Meta can still go fuck themselves)

Edit 2: thank you all for the boosts! I feel like this is an important issue with the potential to affect all of us here, and I appreciate the extended reach. šŸ’œ

Edit 3: Tag your favorite instance admin! (mine's already tagged above 😘)

Final edit: This was the last time *I'll* boost this post, as I don't want to be any more obnoxious than usual.

Final final edit (maybe): This post was quoted in an article, you should read the article.

Mwa-ha-ha indeed! It was not the final edit! The conversation is on again, and there are also a few new-ish articles by Jon on the topic.

It’s hard not to say ā€œAIā€ when everybody else does too, but technically calling it AI is buying into the marketing. There is no intelligence there, and it’s not going to become sentient. It’s just statistics, and the danger they pose is primarily through the false sense of skill or fitness for purpose that people ascribe to them.
2023 has been a tough year. Not just for me - I'm hearing that from many folks. I think it's the year the pressure to pretend that the pandemic never happened has really hit everyone. We're all exhausted from pretending life is back to normal, and we've never had the chance to heal fully.

Hey, maybe the good #Google folks at web.dev can write an article about how the #Firefox slow-down trick on YouTube works so other sites can implement it too.

Youtube has started to artificially slow down video load times if you use Firefox. Spoofing Chrome magically makes this problem go away.

Perhaps one reason why there’s such a big gap between the US public’s negative attitude towards the economy and the Biden administration’s insistence that things are actually great is that a well-functioning and successful capitalist economy is inherently going to exploit and immiserate the vast majority of us.

That is, ā€œthe capitalist economy is functioning exactly the way capitalism is supposed toā€ and ā€œeveryone hates the economyā€ are not at odds with each other.
