I’m trying to find a way to articulate the parallels between Elon wrecking twitter and FIFA at least seriously damaging, if not ultimately ruining, the World Cup

German Democratic Republic (East Germany) poster for the 1954 International Peace Race. East Germany was the winning team in the 1953 race - legitimizing the country to many in the sporting world - so they got to wear the blue Peace Race jersey for the 1954 race.

Possibly unpopular opinion here…but all these complaints about how the influx of new users is impacting Mastodon culture, it just dawned on me that it’s akin to how people speak about immigrants (i.e. “THEY came here, they should assimilate to OUR way of doing things, and adapt our culture”)
As an immigrant myself (in real life) I know first hand the impacts of this inflexible way of thinking. It’s a nuanced topic, but just something for the OG Mastodon inhabitants to consider.

Born on this day, November 18, 1960:
Kim Wilde, singer, here going the extra mile for that British '80s pop queen look.
Happy #BicycleBirthday, Kim!

One can *hear* the Mastodon servers groaning, and creaking, and popping, as everyone here trying to get on that last helicopter off the top of the Hotel Saigon.
Elon Musk should buy Ticketmaster next.
#Intro post (or one of several, more likely). I'm an Assistant Professor of #Urban #Planning, and a former #Transportation #Planner and #Engineer by work experience and training. My #research areas are transportation #safety, especially for people made vulnerable by cars, drivers, and the environment and the systems we've created to prioritize them. I'm trying to educate and empower the next generation of planners and engineers to speak truth to power and demand safer, saner systems.

One thing that's getting a little lost in this mix, is that some of the people desperately holding on at Twitter are because they are trapped by either healthcare or visas.

That there are systemic traps that trap workers in America so they feel unable to move freely to new employers who want them and would have better pay or conditions is *nuts* and deserves a lot more attention than it gets.
