Researchers checked for microplastics in the follicular fluid of 18 women undergoing assisted reproductive treatment at a fertility clinic in Italy, and detected microplastics in 14. This is the first time microplastics have been found in human ovary follicular fluid.

This is “very alarming” said Luigi Montano, a researcher at the University of Rome and a lead author of the Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety study.

Contracts supporting the Women’s Health Initiative regional centers are being terminated in September. These terminations will “significantly impact ongoing research and data collection”.
