I made fresh corn tortillas for the first time last night and I LOVE them. Gluten free store-bought tortillas are always disappointing. These fresh ones have such a good mouthfeel and they don't crack right away. And only two ingredients?!

Now I have to make them often enough to convince my husband it's worth buying a tortilla press and a tortilla warmer and maybe a comal...

Thank you, Mexico and South America!

Advice needed on cat adoption -

My daughter wants to adopt a cap from the local cat shelter. They use sWheat Scoop cat litter, which is made from wheat grain that is not fit for human consumption. My daughter has Celiac. So far, we have not had any wheat or gluten containing products in the house since her diagnosis since I don't want any cross-contamination issues.

I'm not sure what to do.
I don't want to get the cat bathed since I think baths are usually pretty traumatic for cats and he is a senior and I think it would be a bad start.

One idea I had wat to keep him in a smaller area for a few days and allow him to groom himself to remove most of it.

Maybe wipe his feet with a damp towel?

Anyone with Celiac disease out there know if it is possible to get a kit for testing food for contamination (in the UK)? My daughter's blood tests show she is consuming gluten but we buy certified gluten free everything and are super careful with chopping boards etc.

Yesterday we went to a cat shelter because we would like to adopt a cat. The shelter uses sWheat Scoop cat litter, which is made from wheat grain. My daughter has Celiac. Of course, she is not going to eat the cat litter, but it gets into the air and it is not a good idea for someone with Celiac (and perhaps for anyone with the Celiac gene?) to breathe it in. We were using the same cat litter when she started having Celiac symptoms. While she was still in hospital, I got rid of it, got a new cat pan and a new vacuum cleaner and thoroughly vacuumed a few times before she came home.

I don't know if the box has a warning, but I would welcome it if it did since although it is probably obvious to someone with Celiac that they would not want to use this brand, it might not cross the mind of someone who does not have Celiac or a family member with it.

I am reminded of a child with fish allergy who went to a relative's house where they fried fish, inadvertently exposing him to aerosolized fish particles. Sadly, he died.

Fish fumes blamed for allergy death of Brooklyn boy

Police believe fish being cooked may have caused the death of 11-year-old Cameron Jean-Pierre.

I haven't been able to find a loaf of gluten-free bread for under $8.50 for two months now. So I decided this was no longer a splurge; it is infrastructure.

Learnt this week that removing gluten from the diet of people with an inactive coeliac gene increases the risk of developing the disease.

Found-out because I asked my kid's doctor about the whole house going GF, and he advised against it.

Biodegradable Dishware A Danger For Those Gluten-sensitive. 76% of them contain wheat antigen. #biodegradable #dishware #wheat #gluten #celiac

Howard G. Smith MD, AM on Instagram: "Biodegradable Dishware A Danger For Those Gluten-sensitive If you are sensitive to gluten, or, worse yet, have celiac disease, you need to steer clear of biodegradable, compostable dishware and utensils. Pharmacy researchers at the University of Seville now report in an American Chemical Society peer-reviewed journal that certain biodegradable plates and cups contain wheat-related proteins that leak into presumably gluten-free foods. Six of the 8 biodegradable tableware brands contained wheat. Although plate-borne wheat proteins were transferred to solid food when their concentration were high, liquids served in the biodegradable cups readily picked up the wheat antigens. Transfer of the antigens was higher when the food and the tableware were heated and was related to the time during which foods contacted the dishes and cups. Unfortunately, biodegradable, compostable products are not required to list their ingredients on packaging. Given this gap, if you have a wheat or gluten allergy or celiac disease, best to avoid these products altogether at the takeout counter. Not all biodegradable contain wheat, but you don’t want to play dish roulette. https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.jafc.5c07516 #biodegradable #dishware #wheat #gluten #celiac"
