Creative impulses. The urge to be human.

In our modern world, a subtle influence is reinforced that we must be skilled at what we do. We must work well. We must perform well. We must sing well, dance well, make art well. Even in intuitive spaces, a fog of perfection pervades. It is not enough to just express something, we must also attenuate its expression so that it is palatable to others, to society.

If I were to hazard a guess, I would say this is why love and light is so heavily emphasized within spirituality. There’s an underlying desire to make things appear good and well. In order for us to have an enriched experience, we are sold the idea that we should forgo anything which is not positive.

With this Venus/Neptune conjunction I want you to rethink what is good and well. What if, instead of dancing well, you just danced? What if instead of singing well, you just sung? What if instead of painting well, you just create? What if instead of labelling a spiritual experience as good or bad, you just surrender to what is?

Humans need not do things well. They must only do. The must only be.

New moons are said to be times of intention setting, but they are also periods that require deep reflection. Intentions do not come about by mere wisps of wind. They arise from the deepest realms within us. Often we find that we must roll our sleeves up and dig into the fertile soil beneath to discover what it truly is that we desire. You see, intentions are what manifest when we repeatedly encounter the self. You cannot know what you yearn for if you do not first know who you are.

Yet, I’ve come to realize that things are not all what they appear to be. Those who seek out money really desire freedom. Those who seek out power truly desire to be listened to. Those who push cruelty upon others authentically crave a sense of belonging.

Do your desires reflect a true image of yourself? Are you capable of crafting an even more refined image?

Want does not exist in a vacuum. Remove the veil.

The self versus the collective. Deep understanding. Compulsive knowing.

The urge to be regarded fondly is at odds with the desire to completely break free. Many humans will reside on either end of this spectrum, with some prioritizing likability and others prioritizing uniqueness. Very rarely do people find it within themselves to integrate the two. Perhaps it is that case that the desire to live up to a standard versus the desire to obliterate a standard are too at odds with one another. Indeed, integration of conformity and rebellion often proves itself to be difficult, if not impossible. Uprisings are not won through appeasement. Performances are not applauded by disobedience.

Still, both are facets of belonging. Collective modes of being imprint themselves upon us, determining the course of our lives with meticulous subtlety. Will we abide by expectations or will we carve our own way through? Which expression of the two grants us the most influence, the most power? And, is the pursuit of power something that even matters to us?

Practical affections. Sweet dreams. The peace of psychic protection.

I’ve noticed that with Saturn in Pisces, I have more trouble sleeping. Even so, with Venus repeatedly touching the cold rings of this mighty gas giant, my dreams remain saccharine (mostly). Venus in other words, takes the edge off of what would otherwise be an unpleasant experience. She fades the harsh edges, blurring the boundaries between good and bad, positive and negative.

There remains an alternative quality to this transit however. Where Venus dulls the sharp blade of Saturn, Saturn awakens the shadow aspects of Venus. What remains to be confronted? How can we deepen our capacity for love? Can we make peace with the fact that our paths may not always be filled with peace?

The way to expand, to protect, is not by dwelling in the realm of the eternally positive. You must confront the things you seek to avoid, not for the sake of wholeness, but for the sake of the journey.

The illumination of hidden fears. The price of stagnancy.

A wise woman once said that to know your shadow is to befriend the darkest entities. How we view that which is ‘evil’ is also an expression of how we view those ‘unacceptable’ parts of ourselves.

I was watching a podcast episode recently on the Sumerian goddess Inanna, whose identity is often reduced to that of simply a love and fertility deity. In the myths involving Inanna, she descends into the underworld and is reborn upon her return. This story of descent and rising, of darkness and light, has traditionally been seen as an aspect of the feminine. Only in recent history, have these legends been retold through the eyes of man, reduced to tales where the final outcome is prioritized over the journey itself.

Remember that when you allow yourself to descend to your lowest, you are engaging in a revolutionary act that defies the very notion of patriarchal control. The dark is the space of ultimate evolution, of limitless possibility. Those who demonize its pursuit seek to demonize the soul’s journey.

Life cannot exist without the process of descent. Awaken your fears and you too shall flourish.

Unconventional affections. Transformative thoughts. To stop and smell the roses.

Vitality and motivation often seem to go hand in hand, but presently that is not the case. There’s an overwhelming urge to pause and take things in through the senses, to move with care and caution. Yet, there remains perhaps an outer or inner pressure to accomplish big things.

Whenever or wherever there is tension, there is a need for greater integration. The answers to conflicting goals can be found both within and without. Look to those around you to see how they’re managing this conflicting tension. Are they taking their time or are they pushing through? Would taking a similar approach feel the most authentic for you or is another approach necessary?

Remember that what cannot be shown through the other can be gleaned from silent contemplation. Our own minds are much more creative and complex than we give them credit for.

Follow the whispers of thought. Allow the stream of consciousness to lead you to the resolutions you so dearly seek.

Planting new seeds. Embracing the slow life.

I’m writing this post behind schedule, and am reminded of the significance of my behaviour in relation to the Sun having entered Taurus.

Taurus brings with it a steadiness unlike any other. It is the most grounded of the earth signs - the earth sign of the earth signs some might even say. Such energy commonly gets stereotyped as “laziness”, but I know a lot of Taureans, none of whom are lazy. In fact, I’d argue that it’s quite the opposite. There is simply a process of articulating, of slowing things down to a rate of minimal movement. It creates space. And in that space, emerges the possibility for more refined observation and creation. I find that the art projects I embark on during Taurus season have a more enlightened quality to them. They are clearer and far superior in their beauty.

This observation, that slow work creates better outcomes, directly contradicts what we’ve been taught within our capitalist society: that faster is always better.

This Taurus season calls you to remember that slow and steady wins the race. The era of rushing is over.
