What do you do if you end up with more data than can fit in your dissertation (or book or article)?

My latest on how knowing which kind of story you're writing can help you figure out which pieces to publish first and what to do with the leftover bits.

An Embarrassment of (Research) Riches

What to do when you've got more data than your dissertation (or book or paper) can hold

I can’t wait to be in #neworleans this spring for #PAA2023. I’ll be presenting new work that tries to parse out the relative effect of “objective” and “subjective” contexts of immigration enforcement on infant health. Hope to see many fellow #sociologists there!

When I moved to #California I registered to vote at the DMV while picking up my new driver’s license. Every election cycle since then, I’ve received a ballot in the mail without me having to request it. It comes with two booklets, which contextualize each of the votes I can cast. When I’m done, I mail the ballot back (no postage necessary). I get an automatic email confirmation when my ballot is picked up, and another when the ballot is accepted. It should be this easy to #vote everywhere.

I’m an assistant professor of sociology at Stanford, where I study #immigration, #surveillance, and #inequality. Dipping my toes into the water here as part of a possible transition away from that Bird app. Hope you’ll say hello!
