- Demography is increasingly bringing in non-sociology fields like economic history, economics concerned with stratification, public health for reasons internal to those disciplines (e.g., econ increasing interest in inequality), or bc pop centers are organizationally successful, or bc NIH made pop centers diversify their disciplinary base to keep their funding and their strategies for doing so brought new audiences to #PAA / #PAA2023, #DemographyJournal, etc
This year was my first time organizing sessions for the #PAA2023 conference for
@PopAssocAmerica. I was able to organize 4 sessions. It was so great to see them all happen! (I saw 3/4 in person and I heard the 4th one was great.) Makes the effort worth it to see 4 great panels!
This year's #PAA2023 was great! (Except for getting stuck an extra night in NOLA because
@united canceled my flight and did not give me a hotel or an option to get home until 2 days later... I rebooked on @Delta.)
Award-winning poster at #PAA2023 by researchers Isabella Stade and Emily Lybbert. Their research showed how much people know about basic science is associated with their Covid 19 risk, vaccination choices (even net of politics and religion)

Many of our @bib_bund scientists participated in #PAA2023 last week and shared their research work. Inspiring four days full of population research topics:

#Employment #Fertility #Mortality #Health #Longevity #Childcare #LifeExpectancy

Plane can't pull up to gate. Tight connection (20 minutes to dash across DFW?!). Runway congestion. Bad weather. Not enough fuel. No pilot. Overnight in layover city. TSA lines. Boarding pass won't work. Everything that could happen happened to me on my way home from #PAA2023 😂 😭

Still had a great conference though!

Had a great time at #PAA2023 this past week! It was my first time and didn't know what to expect but it was great!

Got to present my work on #geography methods for access to #genderaffirmingcare in Texas

Chaired/organized two panels on #SOGI #demography that were standing room only (like 50-75 people!)

Met a bunch of new colleagues and friends

and now there's talk of a #queer #trans demography affinity group     🥰

At a #PAA2023 session on housework and childcare, again struck that: You can only understand so much about a social structure by studying variation between individuals who are embedded in it.
Check out my poster w/ @jsradford 9-10:30am tomorrow (Saturday 4/15) if you want to talk about measuring cognitive household labor in surveys #PAA2023
Poster up now #PAA2023: "Counting the Hustle: Platform Workers and Digital Entrepreneurship in Federal Household Surveys"
