📣 I want to debunk Reddit's claims, and talk about their unwillingness to work with developers, moderators, and the larger community, as well as say thank you for all the support

I wanted to address Reddit's continued, provably false statements, as well as answer some questions from the community, and also just say...

We, the moderation and administration of tech.lgbt, are signing the Anti-Meta Fedi Pact in fellowship with our peer communities. (https://vantaa.black/pact)

There is over a decade of precedent that Facebook will not have users' best interests as their guiding principle but rather profit margins, if it joins the Fediverse.

We at tech.lgbt have long held the belief that corporation owned instances are a threat to the core of the Fediverse: freedom for users to be themselves and to be a part of their communities. The 2010s saw the loss of online freedom when the majority of the Web was consolidated into a few destinations, and Facebook entering here could lead us back to centralization. Furthermore, NDAs for server admins will constrain our sovereignty online by binding us legally from disrupting their business.

We are not products. We are people, and we do not welcome Facebook in this space.

Do you have a friend or family member who is not on Mastodon?

And you are thinking, "love to introduce them, but the whole multiple servers thing... 🤔"

Well, you are in luck.

A new site makes joining Mastodon a snap >>> https://spreadmastodon.org/

In minutes, #newbies will be up and running on mastodon.social (other instances coming soon).

@spreadmastodon has been developed by @tchambers and his team, so you know it's safe to recommend.

Let's do this!

Reddit's CEO is attacking Reddit moderators, calling them spoiled "landed gentry" who are messing up his service ...

... when in reality Reddit mods do over $3.4 million in free labor annually, as per a recent scholarly estimate

And that's a lowballed, conservative estimate

My essay on it here: https://clivethompson.medium.com/reddit-moderators-do-over-3-4-million-in-free-labor-every-year-d3571235c32c

@bnlandor @tante without getting too tin foil hatty, I still can't help but think there is an angle here. Think about how much traction subs like r/workreform and r/anti work were gaining. Too much collaboration and unity happening between the peasants.
First it was: "Search is bad now, I'll just use Reddit to find answers.". Now Reddit is trying to kill itself while the search engines inject falsehood generators into their pipelines for weird reasons. Finding information is gonna get a lot harder.

Let's be blunt: If you are planning on sticking with reddit at this point, you are part of the problem rather than the solution. Steve only has the power to be this kind of asshole because people give him that power.

Stop giving assholes like Steve Huffman power. Deny him your eyeballs. Deny him your content. Deny him your free labor. Delete your subreddits and delete your accounts.

Here’s the note Reddit sent to moderators threatening them if they don’t reopen

Reddit is messaging moderators of communities that closed to protest its API changes. It says anyone “hindering” reopening can be replaced with someone willing to bring the subreddit back online.

This whole Reddit thing is a reminder that we all need to stop hanging out on websites owned by for-profit corporations.
