In light of US tech oligarchy setting its sights on Wikimedia Foundation, a historical detail I did not know before: #Wikipedia became the non-profit it is today partly as the result of a labour strike of Spanish Wikipedia editors who disagreed with the proposed inclusion of advertisements. Initially, it was not clear what revenue model Wikipedia would get, and Wales moved towards a for-profit model already a year after launch. However, rather than working for free, so Jimmy Wales could profit from their labour via advertising, Spanish contributors forked Spanish Wikipedia as the Encyclopedia Libre Universal. Under the threat of losing the editorial community of such a large language, Wales conceded and set up the non-profit.

That is to say, however imperfect they are, all the digital commons we have are the result of ongoing struggle and hard work to keep them as commons.

«Un libro necesario en tiempos de tecnofobia moralista e interesada. El espacio común de Internet, que nació generosamente libre, ha sido ocupado por unicornios monstruosos bajo la mirada cómplice del statu quo. Ha llegado el momento de recuperar lo que es de todxs. Alguien tenía que decirlo». —Simona Levi

Anarcha-feminists often talk about how liberalism demands you apply "innocent until 100% proven guilty" over any *personal* credences.

But the entire fucking edifice of the democratic state and liberal ideology is predicated on forced ignorance. It's epistemic self-mutilation all the way down.

For anyone who didn’t get to read the official #ProtonMail response to being upset that their CEO vocally supported Trump and his cabinet picks before it was deleted, here are the Toots

Something I don't see a lot of discussion around is the rise in the need of organ transplants needed because of covid (almost 10% of lung transplants in the US are now needed due to covid)... but also the decrease in transplantable organs because of the damage done from people having covid.

So, @alice and I were recently talking about privacy-respecting period tracker apps for Android, and I asked them to search the F-Droid store. Sure enough, there was a good candidate: Mensinator.

It explicitly requests no network permissions, and calls out that it keeps all data on your phone. Seems good so far.

I loaded it up, and entered some data from my other tracking app, Loop Habit Tracker (also very good, FOSS, local only), and at least for now, it looks pretty cool. I've never tried other period tracker apps, so I'm not sure what I'm missing, but this looks like it does the basic functions, and I already have some interesting insights into my extremely variable menstrual cycle.

If you're looking for an Android period tracker app that won't rat you out to your local police/health/misogyny department, it's probably worth checking out.

pretty damn soon it's going to be 5 years since the 2020 uprising, and guess what?? #minneapolis still doesn't have a new 3rd precinct police station, its police force is still down 40%, and they are desperately advertising for new recruits on /reddit/ lmaooo

also, the old police precinct still has its burned facade in plain view, despite the city now having placed banners there saying "cleanup efforts are underway". it's like the city government decided "you know what, we're just gonna leave this burned facade here to remind the world how terrible it was" while everyone else is like "hell yeah! love that the burned facade is still there remind the world how awesome that was!"

so yeah, turns out #RiotsWork, at least a lil
