Writing in the darkness. Disabled. Queer. Neurodivergent. Introvert. Inconsequential.

I unfollow/mute/block people who use ableist/sanist language.

In a couple of different places on Mastodon this week I’ve seen people saying something to the effect of “what does visible alt text matter, it’s for screen readers.”

Here are just a few scenarios why people might want to view alt text visually:

1. “I made the post and I want to double check the alt text I wrote.”
2. “I did not make the post but I want to learn how other people write alt text so I can write better descriptions.”
3. “I’m having trouble making sense of the image but I think a written description would help.”
4. “My vision is enough to read text at my preferred font size but not in a tiny screenshot with jpeg compression.”
5. “This is what works best for me because of reasons I don’t want to get into.”

Accessibility is for everyone. Try not to make assumptions.

Sadly, that's magical thinking. Such vaccines don't exist and may never exist.

The pandemic ends when we #CleanTheAir with #HEPA and #CorsiRosenthalBoxes, and people use #P100 and #N95 respirators.

We stop cholera with clean water -- NOT with vaccines, which aren't good enough.

We stop Covid with clean air -- NOT with vaccines, which aren't good enough.

We don't drink dirty water, why do we breathe dirty air?

That's how this ends

If someone you're with is wearing a mask, don't ask if they want you to wear one, too. Just put one on.

Masks have become contentious and it's really uncomfortable to be on the side of asking someone to mask. Don't put someone in the position of feeling like they have to give you their personal health history to rationalize their request. Just put a fucking mask on.

The pandemic doesn’t end until higher risk people can safely rejoin society.

Please boost if you’re still masking indoors (in public places)

PSA: Lilies are dangerously toxic to cats. Even one small sniff or nibble can cause kidney failure and death. Rapid vet intervention cannot reliably save their lives.

*Never* keep true lilies (lilium) in the house if you have cats.

Make sure your family and friends know too! There's no warning at the store about the danger of lilies, so they get around in the holidays.

I have a climate change novel for the YA market I’ll be submitting shortly. Keen to get it in front of the right people, if anyone knows a publisher keen on this kind of thing? #writers #publishing #climatefiction #climatenovel

I am immune suppressed, unable to make antibodies from vaccines, always masking & sitting outdoors. An isolated life.

An unmasked person coughed near me two weeks ago, & I developed pneumonia. In recovery, but slow.

When I see people who mask, I see love in action.

Love is a verb.

For a meal at a restaurant
a cocktail at the bar
and the illusion of normalcy
hundreds of daily deaths
are an acceptable trade off
at least to those
who are confident that they
will never be counted amongst
those hundreds.
