Photo of the day from the Washington Post, from the article "Underwater treadmills, heated rehab pools: How vets are building palatial pet clinics"; original at https://wapo.st/40fIIm2

Our dog Aurora has also gotten laser treatments for arthritis and sciatica. Did she wear similar goggles for treatment? If yes, why do we not have photos of this?

Underwater treadmills, heated rehab pools: How vets are building palatial pet clinics

The pet industry can’t keep pace with the rapid growth of animal adoptions during the pandemic, so doctors are expanding their services.

I'm in #Montreal now, right after the #COP15 UN conference was held there. I was amused by this poster's mixed French/English URL, https://FuckLaCOP15.org . The site itself is only in French.

It buries you in differing sets of numbers: each of the nicely illustrated animal cards bears four categories, called type 1, 2, 3, and 4. (Why not type A,B,C,D? It would mean fewer numbers to think about, after all!) To research each category, you need values of 2, 4, 7, or 10. If you want to research two type 3s and a type 1, you'll need to add all that up to get a total of 16. (2/4)

ENCYCLOPEDIA, by Eric Dubus and Olivier Melison, arrived last week so @MeeplePhD and I tried it out over the weekend.

You're an Enlightenment-era naturalist, collecting animals and then publishing about them to earn points.

It's basically a set-collection game, though the actions each round are driven by a randomly chosen and rolled bunch of dice. (1/4)

STARSHIP CAPTAINS is a recent game from publisher CGE and heavily borrows its aesthetics from #StarTrek: TNG.
You captain a starship and must deploy your ensigns -- in yellow, blue, and red -- to move around the map, complete missions, repair damage, and advance on diplomacy tracks. I managed my crew poorly, wasting turns on moving to a better place or running out of crewmembers to fulfill a mission, but it was fun to plan out my turns. @MeeplePhD won, 39 points to 28. (2/2)

On our last day at #PAXUnplugged, we played 2 games.

I vaguely thought LUNA CAPITAL was an economic/financial game, based on the name alone -- but it's a tile-placement game where you score points for your largest block of oxygen generators, sets of three greenhouses, the most meteorites, etc. It's a perfectly fine game, but uses the teeniest icons ever, so I had to peer closely at the tiles to identify their type.

This is also the one single game that I won this weekend! (1/2)

Made it to the rally at the end of the route. Congressman Jamie Raskin spoke, as well as someone from the Department of Transportation. So did Daniel Langenkamp, who spoke very movingly about his wife's death and how we needed to do better for road safety.

#bicycling

I'm at a bike rally in Bethesda MD this morning. It's in memory of Sarah Langenkamp, who was killed by a truck in August while on her bike. We'll be making a 10-mile ride to the US Capitol.

It's a chilly morning, 44 degF but luckily there's hardly any wind and I'm wearing a comical number of layers, so it's not too bad.
