Sourcing motive power in the uplands of north Wales was critical for the success of the slate industry from the late C18th on.
Water was initially the only available motive force. The extent to which the landscape was carefully exploited to divert, collect and use water was remarkable.
Later, the slate industry would become some of the very earliest adopters of hydroelectricity.

Loved reading 'Tir: The Story of the Welsh Landscape' by Carwyn Graves with the Doers & Improvers bookclub. A beautiful book about peoples' relationship with the land in Wales, the role of the Welsh language, the history of agriculture here, and thoughts on how we might move forward in more sustainable ways.
