As well as looking at stars, hiking and eating pies, 2022 was also the year i released my first book.

A heartwarming kids book about a #deaf child and the unusual new friend they encounter.

@bushbark a mind-boggling 5000 light years away from us! 😁
@alysonsee it is crazy what's out there to see if you know where to point a telescope! Even a decent camera phone on a tripod or a modest DSLR pointed at Orion can give you a decent glimpse of its magnificence 👍

Light needs about 8 min 20 sec to reach us from the Sun which is 147 million km away.

Let's say this distance corresponds to one sheet of toilet paper. Then the distance from Sun to Neptune is about 30 sheets. Voyager 2, the 2nd farthest travelling human artefact, is about 100 sheets (1/4 of a 400 sheet roll) away.

How far away is the closest star, Proxima Centauri? About 670 toilet paper rolls. And the center of our own Milky Way? 4 million toilet paper rolls.

@Catonauts thank you 🤗 you don't really need any special equipment for big targets like this either, I've seen amazing results people get with their digital cameras, lenses and just small astro trackers. The scale on these targets is mind boggling.
@bushbark thank you 🤗 nature did the hard work really, I just pressed a few buttons and moved a telescope 🤣
@DrLiz thank you 🤗 I really am, I got lucky with guiding, polar alignment and focus and it all came together perfectly for once 🤣

I think this is my favourite nebula photo that I've taken to date. I shot this earlier this month from my back garden here in Wales. Everything came together just right for this one image of the beautiful #RosetteNebula (or #NGC2237).

Shot using a #zwo 533mcpro through a #WilliamOptics #Zenithstar81 attached to a #Skywatcher HEQ5Pro mount

@Mgrrl yeah I can see how it'd be much more interesting (and fulfilling) than just pure #codemonkey (or as I prefer #codepoet ) work day in, day out. I've been coding since I was 10, but recently spending more time mentoring and design/arch so looking forward to doing a full solutions arch role now 👍👍
