Paper meets electronics and fun!

I share DIY projects for teachers and parents who want to get creative with kids using paper, conductive tape and simple electronics.

I have been tinkering around with paper circuit encryption/decryption devices. This one works quite well. It is a simple DIY circuit and the same device is used for encrypting and decrypting. Each message has to provide a key to make the right connections for decrypting.
I am kind of new to this topic. Do you think this could be a fun DIY activity for introducing kids to the topic of secure communication?

We still have slots left for our free DIY Book Lamp workshop tomorrow (at SLB Potsdam, Germany)!

We will use RGB LEDs to make our Book Lamps change color. Plus, we will try my new magnetic switch (see last post) and upcylce old books.
Please #retoot if you have some reach in Potsdam/Berlin.

Workshop is organised by @medienwerkstatt and part of @digitaltag

I'm super excited to finally have my Geodesic Dome project complete. It's now a cosy study space at my University Library, perfect for winter study. It's made from upcycled cardboard from TV boxes and corflute from local election signage, and held together with zipties and tarp eyelets. To make the design, I 3D modelled it in Rhino software with the Polyhedra plugin, then put the model into Pepakura papercraft software to create paper templates that were then hand cut (alas, no laser cutter!)
Here is a DIY "reed switch" made from paper, conductive tape and two magnets. This version is very visual and for my use case definitely better than using a real reed switch.
I am prototyping a new magic switch for my DIY Book Lamp using a reed switch and a magnet. It works so smooth
Tomorrow there is a free Pixel Art Cube workshop at ZLB Berlin (Amerikagedenkbibliothek). More information: https://www.zlb.de/veranstaltungsuebersicht/papierstromkreise/

The prize for winning a top spot at the Hackaday SuperCon SAO challenge with my Bendy SAO design was getting 100 copies of it produced and assembled. These bendy boys just arrived this week. They're getting flashed and paired with 3D printed stands, so now I have a cool giveaway for #teardown2025 next week!

I am not a big fan of 3D printing since it rarely is really useful. But when the idea for this device came to my mind, I had to try it. And it works remarkably well, even with my first prototype. Sadly, I would need multiple ones of these to be helpful in my DIY book lamp workshops.
