@markcooper update a few weeks on: I found the "gambling-style variable reward mechanic" is how notifications can be addictive. That brain dopamine thing! Turning these off, or to silent, now I feel more 'in charge'. My new method is to ask myself if I pick up my phone, 'what is the purpose' or 'intention' of my action? I've found I've been able to avoid 'doom scrolling' by holding myself to account and being consciously aware of what the heck the phone is doing in my hand! cheers :-)
