I like Neal, so I’ll engage here even though I usually don’t. And I’ll explain a point many miss: this is exactly backwards. When you cause a harm, the onus is on *you*. When you break the social conpact, the burden is on *you*. I grew up around poor white people, going to shitty schools, in underfunded areas neglected by the rest of the country. And I don’t think the people there are stupid, actually. I think they make intentional choices just like all of us, and can be held accountable.

A splendid compilation of stellar contemporary female voices covering songs by the legendary Tom Waits.

At first, I wasn’t sure if I’d like this. There’s a certain raw, emotional nerve in Waits’ distinct voice that really drive his songs home, and I was unsure if some of these artists would be able to do them proper justice.

I was very wrong.
Phoebe Bridgers’ “Georgia Lee” is quite exemplary, as is Corinne Bailey Rae’s “Jersey Girl”.

Add other world-class talents like Roseanne Cash, Iris Dement, Aimee Mann and Patty Griffin, and you’ve got an immensely enjoyable collection of great takes on an absolute master’s work.
