"Unleashing Britain’s competitiveness with locational pricing"

"Locational pricing could save £28-£51b on UK energy bills between 2025-40."

Unleashing Britain’s competitiveness with locational pricing

Assessing the impact that large demand users siting in response to locational prices - moving from South to North - could have on their bills, all GB consumer bills, carbon emissions and the need for new network infrastructure.

#OctopusEnergy 🐙 announces the launch of its Cosy 6 #HeatPump #ASHP

Available from December’23 & initial unit is 6kW peak output. Other outputs will follow, but 6kW covers most residential properties.

Will be high temperature capable, allowing for fewer radiators to need replacing, with the trade off of higher running costs (physics!). I’d imagine Octopus will mitigate this to a degree with the special tariff & Smart Control of the unit to optimise for operating cost

UK electricity networks need to rapidly sort heat pump standards

The job of an electricity network is to enable the use of electricity in places and buildings. As we move to a decarbonised world, enabling electrification of heating and transport is the key job of the UK’s privately owned, and Ofgem regulated, electricity networks.

“National Grid (U.K. 🇬🇧) Electricity Distribution (NGED) has made the decision to standardise the fuse installed within domestic style cutouts to 80A.” info from @richardlowes

The UK is sleepwalking into a big problem with its gas network

This post is by Dr Richard Lowes, senior associate at the Regulatory Assistance Project, research fellow at Exeter University and non-executive director on the Scottish Government’s Heat in Buildin…

Inside track

Deeply worried for this country:

UK Ministers preparing 2 allow new houses 2 continue 2b fitted with gas boilers, long after they were supposed 2b phased out, campaigners fear.

A loophole considered 4 the forthcoming future homes standard, a housing regulation in England intended 2 reduce greenhouse gas emissions from newly built homes in line with the net zero target, would allow new homes 2b fitted with “hydrogen-ready” boilers.

Campaigners fear loophole will let new homes in England be fitted with gas boilers

Regulation may allow ‘hydrogen-ready’ boilers that can run on fossil fuel gas, and are unlikely ever to use hydrogen

How retrofitting the UK’s old buildings can generate an extra £35bn in new money

The key point for me is this paragraph which means trades and suppliers need to provide appropriate materials (eg Wood Fibre) and standards (eg moisture safe methods)

The #BoilerUpgradeScheme (England and Wales) that is in place to help households with the system transition costs of moving to an Air to Water #HeatPump (from gas or oil) has not used anywhere near its budget this year, and funds remaining this financial year are to be clawed back from U.K. Treasury!!!

Absolutely bonkers.

Unspent boiler upgrade money will be lost, minister admits - Utility Week

The energy minister has admitted that underspends on the £150 million budget this year for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) will be lost and cannot be carried over. The latest figures from Ofgem show the total value of BUS vouchers issued by the end of January was just under £50 million - with only two months remaining for the first phase of the initiative.
