Wasn't really getting the timing and "feel" right for punches, so I made a punching bag to test on!
@Stealcase Hashtags are usually helpful, such as [#] Masto Art (without spaces). In the Advanced interface you can set up a column just for a hashtag. Once you follow enough artists they may share art by others, and that helps you find folks too. You could also always go to the explore tab of another instance (e.g. https://mastodon.art/explore ) and follow from there.
There are a lot of good ideas in how Mastodon is set up, but the worst ones I've discovered are:
✨️ The choice to host accounts on instances, effectively making multiple walled gardens (and mods having access to DMs 😤).
✨️ Multiple account creation is a huge barrier to mass adoption: reddit and discord use 1 account for everything, and they're more similar to Mastodon.
✨️ I wouldn't use reddit if I had to make an account to browse each subreddit. People hate this: that's why OAuth exists.
