@Alisnarkbar I actually bought a Sanyo Beta Hi-Fi in about 1986 due to the better picture quality and the Hi-Fi feature - which turned out to be awful.
I think I paid about $450 at the time. That was in the period where the early adopters like your dad had already helped save the rest of us a little dough. :-)

I usually disassemble things to discover and demonstrate how they work. I also sometimes repurpose things or do reviews.
