I am pleased to see that the resurfaced and more clearly marked bike lane in Bristol City Centre seems to be working better. We are monitoring it closely to see what further improvements may be needed. @Chris_Boardman @BristolCouncil @BristolCycling
Control panel for lifts at the #atomium is also suitably retro futuristic. Like something from StarTrek ToS.
The #atomium in #brussels is really cool. Love this futuristic artwork from the 1950s
Brussels has a "street lamp museum". Is this too niche? I fear I may like it and get absorbed into the intricate world of street lamps and its various competing factions.

1st day on Mastodon: hi everyone, I'm interested in art, architecture, and cat pics!! ๐Ÿ˜Š

3rd day on Mastodon: gonna find bigfoot and fuck him

Martin Sandbu (FT) identifies four myths about wealth taxes:

Its too hard to do - well that hasn't stopped both Switzerland & Norway doing it (pretty well);

It won't actually raise much money - both countries above it raises substantial revenue;

It will scare the rich away - well it seldom does & then often they go to Switzerland (err, that has wealth taxes);

It will depress investment - no evidence backs up this claim.

So there we have it; wealth taxes are clearly possible!

A sign in Glasgow. I haven't been to the Delta Quadrant in years  ...

@Natasha_Jay
Itโ€™s changed a lot. Basic tourist trap now.
@DrOinFL @Natasha_Jay Wormholes always do that, it gets so busy...before you know it a Quark Franchise has opened..
@Natasha_Jay

It's been a while since I was last in Glasgow.
@Natasha_Jay ugh great. In 5 min this place will be swarming with Klingons complaining about Starfleet arrogance and how bird of prey warp cores have come a long way in the last years.
@grob Next thing the Orions will turn up! @Natasha_Jay
@Natasha_Jay Oh come on!
I can believe it's 2.5 days to Vulcan or 40 days to the Bajoran wormhole! I can even believe the time told for the Cardassian empire is for the closest border! But the Delta Quadrant is a lot bigger!
The Ocampa home world is 75 years away! The Quadrant itself is a lot closer!
@Natasha_Jay And BTW the 75 years were for the Voyager, one of the fastest ships of its time. Not good old Galaxy class Enterprise!
@Natasha_Jay 75 years or, perhaps 83 years? Inquiring minds want to know.
@virtuous_sloth
I'll have to correct my profile to "mid-500ish" before I answer...

@Natasha_Jay Lol.

Depends on the length of your home planet's year, doesn't it?

@Natasha_Jay

Vulcan isn't that far away ๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿ––

@simonzerafa The image shows a street sign attached to the corner of a building. The sign is rectangular with a dark blue background and white text. The text on the sign reads "STRYD YR EFAIL VULCAN ST." The building's wall is painted a light beige color, and there are two windows visible in the image. The window on the left has a white frame and is partially open, while the window on the right is closed and also has a white frame. The corner of the building is adorned with a decorative white stone molding. The overall appearance suggests a residential area with a historical or traditional architectural style.

@Natasha_Jay But when were you last on Vulcan?

@Natasha_Jay
So this has triggered a thought I had decades ago while my partner was watching Star Wars.

In three dimensional space you wouldn't refer to a Delta Quadrant which is a 2 dimensional term.

Perhaps there is someone knowledgeable about #geometry or #astronomy who knows the term for a quarter of a sphere.....

Came across the word tetartosphere but assume it isn't in common use.

@leighms @Natasha_Jay you're right, but i think the hand wavey bit is that it's a breakdown of the milky way, which is sorta disc shaped. So they can treat it vaguely 2D

@tomasino @Natasha_Jay
That makes sense.

Ta

@leighms @tomasino @Natasha_Jay Yep! Galactic quadrants are in fact a real thing astronomers use in their communications sometimes! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galactic_quadrant

Our galaxy is also assigned latitudes and longitudes and sometimes even cardinal directions. (Galactic East is the direction it rotates, the rest follows from there.)

@leighms @Natasha_Jay
Heh, you just annoyed 2 fan bases. See if you can work in The Doctor.
@Natasha_Jay I hear they have a Quark's now! ๐Ÿธ

@Natasha_Jay

Shouldn't take that long to get to Vulcan from Glasgow even without a starship.

Vulcan, Alberta, Canada, that is.

There's a Trek museum there because of the name. Leonard Nimoy went there and led a parade once.

That guy was so awesome!
