At least 79 migrants drowned early on Wednesday and hundreds more were missing and feared dead after their overloaded boat capsized and sank in open seas off Greece, in one of Europe's deadliest shipping disasters in recent years.
Born on July 4, 1844 in Albany NY, USA, the sculptor, Mary Edmonia Lewis, also known as Wildfire, made important contributions through her groundbreaking work and artistic vision. Overcoming adversity as a woman of mixed race at a time of racial prejudice and discrimination, Edmonia defied societal expectations about the capacity of her race and gender by skillfully blending neoclassical style with themes of Black & Native culture.
