Some ideas on how to create a public radio broadcaster in Canada in case right-wingers form the federal government and defund the CBC, the only remaining public broadcaster in Canada

The Libs just lost a "safe" seat they had held since 1993.

If the electorate is really tired of PMJT then the cons will likely form the next government and hence defund the CBC.

I'm not convinced that the Libs could win in 2025 even with a different leader.

It is time to start making plans for #PublicRadioCanada that is funded by public donations and not government.

$100M a year in listener funding represents about one million people each donating $100 per year.
That's a big ask in tight economic times like the present.

It seems like a formidable mountain to climb.
However doing nothing might doom future generations to a massive AI generated sh*t-storm of misinformation.

We are going to need trusted people to explain things now and especially in the near future.

Any help would be greating appreciated.

I'm not sure what one person with an idea can accomplish.
TV might cost too much but it might be possible to fund a national radio service (also available via internet).

#PublicRadioCanada might take thousands of volunteers just to get started.

My hopes:
- no corporate sponsors
- fee-free to the entire world
- listener funding only

How does one convince enough Canadians to donate something like $100M a year to maintain minimal national and local news as well as arts and culture?

The federal polls are not looking good for anyone but right-wingers here in Canada which means that sometime in 2026 (spring budget?) our only remianing public broadcaster, the CBC, will be defunded by PP and the cons.

IMO it is well past time to start planning for a 100% people-donation-funded public radio network in Canada.

Ideas from all over the world would be welcome at this point.

This is so much that needs to be done.

Suggesting #PublicRadioCanada to share ideas.

Hopefully you remembered to send some toots using hashtag Fediblock, which is what it's to be used for. If the trolls are hounding your instance then they will likely attack so many more.

Keep in mind that there are more good people than bad people out there.

Stay strong. Toot on.

Over the past few hours, my timeline was descended upon by very ugly users who have been spewing profanity and vulgar language. They obviously have a network and descended en mass. I just blocked 5 domains and didn't lose a single follower. Hopefully I got them all. Apologies if you see something vulgar. Adding: Blocked three more domains. Didn't lose a single follower. (One of my posts was attracting them. It wasn't important so I deleted it. That way you all won't see the ugliness)

So Birdsite is threatening to give the @NPR account to someone else with the sad excuse of not sending a Tweet for 30 days.
Just one more reason why the world needs a system like #Mastodon.
If it happens to #NPR then it will happen to just about anyone.
So if you don't kiss Musk's butt then you lose access to your account?
Reminds me of so much of #POTUS45.

So how would we know about this story if not for #PublicRadio and Mastodon.

NPR is the only major journalism org to have shown a spine in dealing with Musk. So he's threatened to give the NPR username to someone else. Yet even now -- despite Musk's growing contempt for and acts against journalism -- most media organizations and their employees STILL pour their work and some of their advertising money in to his rancid site. What will it take for journalists to wake the hell up? https://www.npr.org/2023/05/02/1173422311/elon-musk-npr-twitter-reassign

This is extraordinary.

The Montana House has banned Rep. Zooey Zephyr from the House for the rest of the session.

I wonder how her constituents feel about losing their full representation and their voice.

And so the attack on democracy continues.
In plain sight.
