During the 1970s many big mental hospitals were closed and many people being moved into the community. For a brief while I was involved in the rehabilitation of these people. I was told that many of the women had been sent to mental hospital due to being classed as moral Deficient (imbecile) (Mental Deficiency Act 1913). These included single mothers! This act was only abolished in 1959! It was not just Victorian times.
