It was an old Ash tree. I don't think the tree is dead but is probably dying. It's showing signs of an Emerald Ash Borer infestation. The EAB is an invasive insect and has been found in many parts of #Vermont.
I can't do anything practical to save this tree, but I can start growing more Ash trees.
