🌍🤖 New update on the PRISM project: spatial ML validation, model errors, improving R packages (incl. supercells), and contributing to open geocomputation resources.

I am teaching data science, with exam composed of a Jupyter Notebook containing a complete analysis (see https://martinfleischmann.net/sds/course_information/assignment.html). You can guess how the submissions look these days... So, how are you doing courses like this? I am not willing to mark LLMs.

NASA Scientific Visualization Studio | Science On A Sphere: Aerosols in the Air

NASA merges observations, advanced models and computing power to monitor aerosols in the atmosphere. Aerosols are tiny invisible solid or liquid particles that float in the atmosphere and can travel long distances affecting air quality and visibility far from their source. These particles come from natural and human sources and include black carbon (orange/red), sea salt (cyan), dust (magenta) and sulfates (green).

We're planning to join Google Summer of Code with PySAL again this year. Though so far, it is not going well. We see a massive increase in people “wanting to get in touch and make a small contribution" before the student application window opens. PRs generated by LLMs, responses to our questions generated by LLMs (ffs!), demands to point them to easy issues, flooded Discord, private emails (ffs 2x!!). I've never seen this before. It is a DDoS on our maintenance capacity and I hate it all. #rant

New package: gwlearn (because I just can't help myself I guess)

It provides a framework for geographically weighted modeling by bridging scikit-learn with libpysal. You can basically wrap standard sklearn estimators (regression or classification) to make them spatially explicit using local weights. What is super cool, is that you can define your own neighbourhoods and fit models across those, breaking the Euclidean distance cage.
