@lifsa19 I think the film well demonstrates the powers and dangers of labels and how they can affect entire populations. Once black individuals were labeled as criminals and lesser by society, they have struggled for equity and equality. It has been very difficult for the roots of those labels to break, even though I tend to hope our society is more progressive then the society of the 1800's. #so345
@Harry21 I totally agree. The incentives with private prisons also allow for further discrimination among those who are frequently imprisoned. Those already deemed as deviant biy society are more likely to be imprisoned for thier deviance, wheter that deviance breaks the law or not. #so345
@darkside11 Yes, as people are more cop-wise, they become more fearful of the police and what they are doing in certain communities. Police often increase their presence in communities that they have already shown a bias for, perpetuating systems of fear and violence, instead of being helpful. #so345
@botboink I agree. Street-level policing, especially when it is wrong, is a byproduct of the labels already put onto society. It creates a world where people are unable to escape from their place in life because we make it impossible for them to do so. #so345
@spyality We shouldn't be surprised. Officers are not overseen or regulated by the people, so we should not be surprised when they do not act for the people. Something like the Camden experiment and really looking into who we let police our cities and how we let them do it, is one of the major ways to increase not only public safety, but integration with public systems. If we want to trust our systems, we must actually work towards changing them. #so345
@botboink I totally agree. There should be better regulation over both training and hiring practices. We should not allow people who see themselves as vigilantes or warriors to go out into a public that has many reasons to fear them. Better training is a major way to help prevent police brutality. #so345
@dizzywind_ I think this idea can be applied to a lot of stigmatized identity characteristics. Some individuals are forced to play into different labels so they do not face the stigma from their “deviant” own. #so345
@botboink This is an interesting idea. I almost wonder if it’s ever possible to fully get out from a deviant label? Is the effect of social stigma too great? #so345
@dizzywind_ I think teachers can definitely be gatekeepers. They, like other keepers of the system, have great control over how one is treated within society. Students from upper classes are given more and allowed to getaway with more because of their upper classes. #so345
@lickety_splitz this is a great question both sociologically and philosophically. I think there is an inner I without other people, but it exists in a very different space than the modern inner I. So much of our selves is influenced by our own self perception in the context of other people that without other people our self perception would be fundamentally altered. #so345
