Friendly reminder that #scareware is the oldest #soceng trick in the book. Don't let your urgency about #ageverification trick you into getting less safe unverified "alternatives" (have no specific examples, just thinking aloud).
@axusss the point is that broadcasting an age signal to any application that wants it is not parental control. We already have restricted user accounts, we already know the vast majority of websites we don't want kids accessing, and we already have local network logging software. None of what is happening right now is about strengthening parental control. If it were the conversation would be about educating parents on internet safety and how to set up local restrictions that work (for most).
@axusss yes because kids only ever use approved applications and websites. And only good government approved applications exist on the internet. And no criminals that would target kids exist.

Imagine your kids needing to tell online predators running a rogue service their age when they initially use it.

@Em0nM4stodon don't just focus on privacy. Focus on the fact that age verification actively makes kids unsafe by making them targetable (not just the worst cast but also scammers given they're less savvy to social engineering) by malicious agents by allowing api's to ping their os level age data.
@AccordingtoWouter it will by making those kids who are unable to access vpns or other workarounds and therefore less internet savvy more vulnerable by enabling them to be targeted by scammers and malicious actors.

@eff can we make more of the fact that creating OS level age identification signals allows children to be specifically targeted by malicious actors (best case scenarior being scammers due to children being more vulnerable to soceng, but also much worse cases eg roblox). The law being promoted as "protecting children" may actually put them in real danger.

Recent #systemd developments:

- Remove support for SysV scripts in rc-local

- Pave the way for lying code replication machines ("AI") to auto-review pull requests

- Introduce user surveillance by collecting personal data, starting with birthDate

I say at this point, if you are running public-facing systemd-based #Linux distributions, you are actively harming your users, your community, and society as a whole.
