The greatest bird artist you’ve never heard of
"Brasher sought a more naturalistic treatment, without Audubon’s operatic drama. Although he hunted and collected birds as a young man, he gave up that approach later, preferring close observation to specimen hunting. His paintings have a lightness and transparency wholly different from Audubon’s heightened atmosphere."

"For decades, famed professor Tim White used a vast collection of human remains... to teach his anthropology students at the University of California, Berkeley.
White, a world-renowned expert on human evolution, said the collection was passed down through generations of #anthropology professors before he started teaching with it in the late 1970s. It came with no records, he said. Most were not labeled at all or said only “lab.”

"The segregation based mainly and specifically on race and color which the United States Government carries on is despicable, illogical and uncivilized … To perpetuate it in the case of the Gold Star mothers who are visiting great cemeteries where the putrid remains of their dead sons were buried very largely by Negro soldiers, is the last word in this national disgrace.”

On W.E.B. Du Bois and the Disgraceful Treatment of Gold Star Mothers

Look up, listen, and be very concerned. Birds are vanishing – and their crisis is our crisis
Mark Cocker

The UK has lost 40m birds since 1970 and Europe as a whole has lost 600m birds since 1980...long been the worst of any country in the region. The North American continent, meanwhile, but especially the US, has seen avian populations fall by almost a third since 1970, losing a cumulative 3bn birds. #Climate_Change #Biodiversity #Birds #extinction

@futurebird Same here in Washington Heights except near the parks, and those are worse every passing year. I have noticed these contributors: too much salt, esp. near parks like Ft. Tryon; an almost casual or even recreational use of Roundup by both Parks and road crews; constantly cutting back plant growth before flowering and/or seeding; removing leaf litter and tree stumps even in the parks. There are more reasons, though, I am sure.
