YES, WHAT IS IT?!1?!

(The particular authors are not to blame, the journal has all titles in caps)

Materialism is realism
But only if the individual involved in it has come to the bottom of their existence as a being that relates with other human beings and not just ideologies and worldviews

In the end, I cannot take anything with me

Musing about the end of life and the afterlife and what this has to do with materialism

🔹 Context: industrial revolution. Mechanisation in agriculture meant less workers were necessary on the field, so people go to the city to find a job. This leads to exploitable workers, low wages, dangerous conditions.

🔹 Marxism is a scientific method. (I didn't know that.)

🔹 "Philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways; the point, however, is to change it." Now finally a philosophical point of view I can agree with.

🔹 Hegel: ideas and understanding are the motor of change in the world.
Marx: no, material conditions are. You need to change the material conditions of people in order to change your understanding of the world.
This is "materialism" (Marx) as opposed to "idealism" (Hegel).

🔹 For example: individual wage labour creates individualism, whereas villages create solidarity, because people have specialisms. If the baker is ill, no one in the village has bread. In a factory, workers compete for wages.

“…this idea that nature is devoid of mind until brains somehow secrete it, as though that same dead stuff could be transformed into conscious life simply by rearranging it, is not a scientific fact. It is not even, so far as I am concerned, a coherent scientific theory. It is a metaphysical assertion that denies that it is a metaphysics. It is a materialist dogma…”

It’s not enough that just one person is an idiot
..the whole system must be idiotic. Bourgeois ideology is obsessed with the strongman, for better or for worse. If Hitler had been thrown out of the window in 1925, there would have been no German fascism. As daft as that sounds, it’s also a widespread belief, mainly because of that Jesus story.
Historical materialism, and even more so Foucault’s structuralism, show that social conditions lead to outcomes. This can be accelerated by charismatic figures, but never triggered. Similarly, the current decline of Western hegemony is in no way attributable to Trump. Nor has it ever been. And sometimes I believe that Trump knows this. That he is, by design, the angel of the Apocalypse. Like the Judas of the Gospel of Judas, who sacrifices himself to fulfil the prophecy. He wouldn't be the first to see nihilism as the way out.
