#Nottingham (England) Beginner-Friendly String Orchestra - which would be a covid-careful enterprise, in fact I might end up having to rename it to the Masked Orchestra or something like that.

And maybe I'll do some other things along the way which would lead to such a thing existing.

Nottingham-related #AskFedi: anyone know of a Nottingham-area house or flat that's going to be empty over part or all of the summer? and that's potentially rentable for not too much for a few days, or wants house-sitting for a while?

It would be so that me and a friend/colleague could go and use the space to do some writing work together. We are reliable conscientious old(ish) people who'd leave it clean and not be any bother :-)

Boosts very welcome.

Hey folks, I wonder if the power of the Fedi network can help me here.

I've been giving some more thought to the possibility of creating covid-careful social &/or musical events near where I live.

Is there someone out there who shares my care for people still shielding, AND knows a lot about grants and the funding landscape in England? They wouldn't necessarily have to live anywhere near me - we could confer from a distance.

Boosts & connections very welcome!

Thinking about... What if we had a covid-careful hand-chime group as well as the covid-careful string orchestra?

Chimes are among the most accessible, most immediately-fun instruments to play.

Hence more "catchment area" of potential "masked musicians", hence venue hire more feasible. Could have both groups same evening.

Any covid-careful people around #Nottingham who might like a new little musical adventure?

Thinking again today about possible forms of covid-careful gatherings for Nottingham.

Actually I kind of want to blog about this - about how my thinking has evolved, what I think might be possible now, and so on. Not sure when I might get around to that. But at least got as far as talking with a friend about it today!

What I've been thinking about is re-engineering _towards_ that direction.

Maybe to build momentum towards a covid-careful orchestra, we'd need some covid-careful other things? maybe just a covid-careful #Nottingham meetup for starters. Cast the net wider, get going, and even if we never found enough musicians in the end, it'd be something good.

So yeah despite the recent lack of posting here, it's still on my mind!

I've been thinking about the future of the orchestra plan.

Since I had the original idea, the mainstream climate has changed such that far fewer people are masking. I think that was already swinging around by the time I announced it, & it's part of why we didn't get quite enough people to fund the costs of the venue I'd identified.

But the covid-carefulness was an essential part of it for me, & I don't want to ditch it just to have "any old orchestra".

It’s not too late to learn the piano / guitar! Yes, even if you can’t read music. It’s not too late to learn to read music.

To learn to speak a new language. To learn to knit or sew. To learn to do woodworking. It’s perfectly fine to not do any of these things too. It’s perfectly fine to not want to do anything as well.

But if you have ever been curious about something, especially something different from the things you do for money, you can do anything

I truly feel that the moment I liberated myself from the ideas of ‘doing / learning things for productivity / success’, my relationship with everything changed. Like wdym I can learn typography without becoming a designer, learn to play an instrument without ever performing, and just.. be?

There’s a lot of info about ‘perfecting a craft’ but I’d bet it would help most people to just ‘dabble in a craft’

Haven't posted here for a while. There weren't quite enough people to start the orchestra in September like I wanted, and I ran out of steam a bit. The winter was always going to be the "off season" anyway.

Now I've come round to thinking that maybe the orchestra needs to function as part of a wider network of covid-carefulness - which is also something I'm interested in contributing to.

So for the covid-careful people of Nottingham... let's see what's possible.
