The Guiness Pig Diaries

I read this article yesterday and I'm still musing on it. There's something I really like about the idea of framing our position & commitments as "a subculture". That rings true to me.

Some snippets from the article:

"the COVID Conscious community’s vision for the future lives in the ever-present now – without denial."

"This pragmatism allows for an actual future, not a fantasy future"

"we have an aesthetic ... we have shared resources, language and references"

"Referencing the past is essential, but copying it reflexively is unproductive."

"While solutions aren’t always easy, we believe they exist—whether it’s masking, clean air, COVID-safe events, or free testing and vaccinations, our resolve remains: we’re not giving up on a good future."

"this community spans drag kings, cartoonists and activists, musicians, rappers"

"We’re showing that there’s hope and liberation on the other side of a realistic risk assessment – and there’s no need to pick and choose safety based on the criteria set by capitalist forces."

COVID Consciousness as a Subculture

The nostalgia freeze is a crisis of imagination. COVID consciousness is a way out.

Positive Deviance

Nice write-up in The Sick Times, of people making a success of covid-careful music shows.

"Her solution was to rent out a club herself in order to set her own standards ...
"... people get it. Many people thanked me and sent me messages like, ‘Thank you, I’m chronically ill. That’s really nice to think of me.’”"

“When I organized my first show … I had no idea how well it would do, but we actually sold out pretty fast!”

These artists are making concerts safer with COVID-19 precautions - The Sick Times

While most of the music industry has “moved on,” COVID-conscious performers have been working to prevent their shows from being superspreaders.

The Sick Times - Chronicling the Long Covid crisis

"Hi, my name is Jamie and I am doing my master's thesis on Covid conscious communities. I am a social anthropology student at Stockholm University. I myself am Covid conscious and chronically ill/disabled, and with my thesis I hope to highlight the importance of Covid conscious communities and the many things that can be learned from them."

"Feel free to scroll through and just answer the questions that you have the energy to answer."

Pass it on :-)

Covid Conscious Communities Survey

**You must be at least 18 years old to fill out this form** Note: in this survey I use the term "Covid conscious" to refer to anyone who takes precautions against getting/spreading COVID-19. I recognize that some people prefer to use other terms, or might feel that they do not take enough precautions to be considered Covid conscious. Anyone who recognizes COVID-19 as a harmful disease that needs to be mitigated is welcome to fill out the survey. Hi, my name is Jamie and I am doing my master's thesis on Covid conscious communities. I am a social anthropology student at Stockholm University. I myself am Covid conscious and chronically ill/disabled, and with my thesis I hope to highlight the importance of Covid conscious communities and the many things that can be learned from them. In my thesis I will argue against narratives that pathologize Covid conscious people. My main research question is: how do Covid conscious communities resist harmful societal norms and systems? This survey is one of several ways that I am gathering data to help answer this question. Filling out this form is completely voluntary, and you can skip any questions that you don't want to answer. Feel free to scroll through and just answer the questions that you have the energy to answer. Partial answers are welcome. Your answers can be as long or short as you want. If you have any questions for me, you can write them (and your email address) in the final question box and I will do my best to get back to you. Everything you write in this form will remain anonymous. Thank you so much for taking part in this survey! Please share it with your Covid conscious friends if you can! This survey will close in March 2026. Project supervisor: Ivana Maček

"I started making mask chains in 2025 because I wanted my respirator to look like an intentional part of my outfit. I found that this increased my confidence when interacting with other people. I enjoyed making them so much that I decided to start selling them to raise money for Breathe Easy Sheffield, a volunteer-led organisation working to make indoor social and cultural spaces safer, more inclusive, and more accessible."

New year, new people arriving here... new re-intro post!

Jennifer here, old queer writer / musician / geek, based in Nottingham, England.

Music-wise, I write songs and play bass, as well as having violin skills and occasionally writing for orchestra. Latest just-for-fun music thing is practising on drum kit when I get the chance: nothing flash, just playing along to songs I like.

A big learning-interest for me right now is Systemic Modelling, a set of tools for catalysing collective intelligence in groups.

Work-wise, my main thing currently is the organisational side of (mostly online) courses for people to learn about SysMod. Being in & around all that is great for my own learning, so I'm pretty happy with work at the moment.

Covid-careful. Still following the science updates. Recently did a long blog post about having and mostly-recovering-from Long Covid.

Used to be a regular at BiCon the UK bi conference/ convention; dipped in again in 2025 when it came to Nottingham.

This year, I want to do more blog-writing and music-recording... and maybe catalyse a covid-careful social meetup of some kind, although limits of energy & time might hinder that wish.

In terms of party politics, right now I'm liking the look of what the Green Party are up to.

I've been on Fedi since late 2022 when I realised Twitter was headed down the dumper, and overall I really like it here.

Sometimes I post about little bits of sewing-mending I've done or button badges I've designed, or the odd pic (with alt text) of a tree or flower or moss.

Lived in Leiden NL for a few years as a child, went to school there, still speak some Dutch. I never seemed to see any Dutch tweets back in the Twitter days, I suppose because the algorithm there was segregating the languages. I like how the Fediverse software doesn't do that, thereby assisting me to keep that bit of my brain ticking over :-)

If you want to know more, ask &/or follow :-)

Yesterday I was enthusing to a friend about the "Breathe Easy" groups, and it's occurred to me I should enthuse here too!

"Do you enjoy going out and socialising, but feel cautious since the COVID-19 pandemic? Are you avoiding crowded and indoor venues? You are not alone! ...

"Breathe Easy Sheffield and Breathe Easy London are both small community groups hosting regular COVID-safer socials and other one-off events."

Recently I joined in for an online "watch the same event and then have a chat" with some folks from the Sheffield group, and enjoyed it. They also do in-person events about once a month, I just haven't been to one (yet) as it's out of town for me. Great to be able to swop useful info as well.
