I’m coming weeks, I’m giving a talk on social media and it’s role in promoting the work of scientists (particularly PhD students). I’ve had limited experience here with Mastodon. Any perspectives you’d like to share on #scicomm relevance or personal experience?

Reminder about Australia's official #WildPollinatorCount! We're usually running a count this time of year, but we're still on hiatus. Any news on when we'll be back will be posted on our website #CitizenScience #OzPollinators #Pollinators https://wildpollinatorcount.com/2022/11/11/update-official-wild-pollinator-count-is-still-on-hiatus/
Update: Official Wild Pollinator Count is still on hiatus!

Just a quick reminder that the Official Wild Pollinator Count is still on hiatus! We’re busy with family commitments and we are taking some time to collate and analyse the seven years of data…

A few folks have asked for tips on #Mastodon so here goes:

- Use hashtags. It helps to connect with interesting people who have similar interests. (ex. I found fellow #science themed bakers!)

- Mastodon isn’t #Twitter & there’s more to social media than outrage & doomscrolling. Cross posts from the birdsite & RTs look odd.

- Don’t worry about follower counts. Tailor the experience to what you want to see.

- Share what you’re passionate about! That’s why so many of us are enjoying it here.

A few recommendations for life on Mastodon:

1) Follow anyone you think looks potentially interesting; you can always unfollow later, and they may lead you to new people via boosted posts.

2) Boost posts you think are worthy, so others can discover new content.

3) Don't obsess on replicating your Twitter follows on Mastodon; let it be its own experience, and grow it organically. Obvs follow anyone you miss from Twitter, but this isn't a 1:1 replacement; have fun, follow your instincts.
