4) Do other animals kiss?

We see many kissing-like behaviors in all sorts of species, but we don't call it “kissing” because scientists don't want to anthropomorphize & don’t know what motivates an animal. That said, these behaviors are always about a socially significant connection.

Born in 1852, Mary Titcomb had a strong desire for an education & career.

Mary became a librarian & making #books accessible to everyone was a priority. She came up with a children’s room & set up “book stations” in shops & post offices in town.

But Mary noticed people from rural areas weren’t visiting the #library. So, she secured funding to build & begin the nation’s first bookmobile. 📚

3) Meet the sensory homunculus. It's like a brain's-eye view of the body where each part is sized according to how much neural real estate goes toward processing sensory information related to touch there. As you can see, the lips & tongue are packed with sensitive nerve endings, helping us interpret our world.
2/2 #ChatGPT and #OpenAI pretend to be the work of genius coders in Silicon Valley but in fact rely on the hyper-exploitaion and traumatization of a bunch of people in Kenya. Hmm... Remind anyone of anything? I guess if modern #capitalism was built by #slavetrade I guess it makes sense that the new #siliconvalley is built by an analogue. Only surprised that #apartheid baby Musk didn't get there first. (H/t to JPD for framing it in these terms.) Meet the new #robberbarons same as the old ones.

1/2 @Jigsaw_You put me onto this #theguardian article which makes great points about the carbon footprint of #ChatGPT and the fact that it relies on the appropriation of millions of people's creative work with the kind of regard for IP that would have put an entire generation of MCs in prison for life. #OpenAI plays by the rules of #Stalin : sample one sentence get sued, sample a billion and become a hero. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/feb/04/chatgpt-isnt-a-great-leap-forward-its-an-expensive-deal-with-the-devil

BUT it leaves out one other important fact...

ChatGPT isn’t a great leap forward, it’s an expensive deal with the devil

The new chatbot is generating a lot of hype, but we would do well to consider its human and environmental cost

12 years ago, my 2nd book, The Science of Kissing (Hachette, 2011) came out. It’s about the neuroscience, biology, evolution, history, real chemistry & potential future of connection.

With #ValentinesDay around the corner, would fellow #science & #culture nerds on #Mastodon be interested in a few facts & stories from the book?

More than Mark Twain or Abraham Lincoln, Douglass posed for dozens of portraits and, in the process, he showed what Black freedom and dignity looked like.

Frederick Douglass: The Most Photographed American of the 19th Century

Frederick Douglass understood that it would take much more than rhetoric and the Civil War to make white Americans grant black folks their humanity.

New to Mastodon and already enjoying the feel. Trying hard to break the habit of only posting things that make me furious, but it's *hard* lol. Hoping to move towards more upbeat vibes, but will still keep my eyes on the evil-doers.
