I'm interested in US & geopolitics.

Representative democracy, individual rights & dialogue are good. Authoritarianism, corruption & big tech are bad.

Elon made me do it.

A reminder that we asked young people to turn out and they did. Latino voters leaned into Democrats. Black men voted overwhelmingly for Stacey. Abortion was top of mind for women. Black women continued to show up strong. The Party should not compromise on the priorities of those voters. They hold the future.
So, if Twitter goes to hell and just becomes defunct, we’re going to lose entire chapters of recent history — including evidence of war crimes, human rights violations, and more. I hope we’re all paying attention to this and considering what we need to do to ensure that a billionaire can’t decide which parts of history to retain — and which parts to erase forever.

I had so much fun putting together this week’s editorial cartoon post for my blog.

The Week’s Best Cartoons: About That Red Wave

By Clay Bennett Despite the Republican Party and most of the media buying into the prediction of a red wave, it never materialized on Election Night. In fact, this is the first time since 1936 that…

I don’t think of the mid-term elections in the partisan political terms of whether the Democrats or the Republicans “won” or “lost.” I think of these midterm elections only in the “constitutional” terms of whether American Democracy won or lost.

Things I like so far about #Mastodon:

- No quote RTs. If you've got something to say about a post, replies are a great tool to engage with the author.

-No conflict baiting algorithm.

-Fewer people. While fewer people mean less engagement, I think, on average, quality is higher with an early self-selecting group.

-Feeling of community based on mutual distaste for traditional social media.

Tips for journos trying out Mastodon.

Use the the #Introduction hashtag for your first #Mastodon post.‬

Then verify your profile and add link to your Twitter handle in the edit profile pane.

If you have a blog or other Web site where you can post HTML, the change is instant.

Instructions are on the page, you may need an IT admin to do this for your university or workplace site where you are published.

H/t to @jeff for confirming that I appear verified to other users.

The place to watch now is Donbas. Russia will likely move some of the forces they pulled out of Kherson there to continue their multi-month and so far futile assault on Bakhmut. The Ukrainians will also likely reposition their forces from the south into Donbas. Northern Luhansk oblast is where they can likely make the most progress in the near future
