Things I like so far about #Mastodon:

- No quote RTs. If you've got something to say about a post, replies are a great tool to engage with the author.

-No conflict baiting algorithm.

-Fewer people. While fewer people mean less engagement, I think, on average, quality is higher with an early self-selecting group.

-Feeling of community based on mutual distaste for traditional social media.

@MattEnjoysLife I agree with all your points, particularly for one about lack of algorithms that generate conflict.

Going back to the other place, our timeline is now just filled with right-wing commentators and Tory politicians. Had been going that way for a while...the hazard I guess of getting triggered into responding to one and then the algorithm just sends more bad vibes your way. So good to not have that experience here...so far.

@JugglingWithEggs I haven't exactly had the same experience as I am in the US, but its absolutely true that when you log in on the bird, the first things they show you are designed to piss you off. And they know exactly how to piss you off (thus creating conflict-based engagement) because they know everyone we follow & every post we like. We really need to help folks build up some cognitive defenses to this sort of manipulation because it's all over the place now.
