Planning a #conference? Include Mastodon at least as prominently in your materials as you do other social media. If you ask presenters or attendees for handles, ask for their Mastodon handle. This is an important opportunity for the Fediverse to reach, welcome, and engage key global audiences. #academia #event

My thanks to the organizers of COSine 2023. I did two panels tonight, Writing Monsters and the History of Science. The first was terrific fun: one the second I felt a bit like an imposter, surrounded by History PhDs. I think I lost everyone with an example of using physics in The Dresden Files, but other than that it went fine. https://www.firstfridayfandom.org/cosine/

These shy animals eluded humans for so long. This is the story of their discovery.

Inspired by a story we published last year about the first confirmed live sighting of Sato’s beaked whales, artist Rozi Hathaway created a comic version! She included info about Hal Sato, a Japanese researcher dedicated to locating these evasive whales.

Tim Halloran's The Bigfoot Influencers is well worth reading. While I research cryptozoology, I've never been deep in the Bigfoot subculture and so have missed a lot (likely to my overall benefit, given the rivalries and sniping, though I've missed some great storytelling). There is a lot in this collection of interviews with Bigfoot hunters (only 1 skeptic) I didn't know about. The QR codes with extra content are a nice touch.
