The thing that gets me is we already had working speech transcription, we had useful digital assistants, and the insertion of LLM based "AI" made them worse and even less reliable.

@gwynnion I forget who made this observation but:

The AIs that just did their jobs fairly competently are female coded (Alexa, Siri) and the response was "Meh. Kinda neat."

The AIs that confidently spout bullshit are generally male coded (e.g. Claude) and the response was "We must give them billions of dollars and put them in charge of everything!"

Okay, look--internationally. In the Fascist USA, in countries that used to trade with them (like us here in Canada), and everywhere else...

Is the lesson clear enough yet?

I know not everyone speaks English, but the English have an aphorism for this.

"Don't put all your eggs in one basket."

Energy policy, trading partners, defense alliances... DIVERSIFY. Always.

Is the lesson clear enough yet?

@hamishb of course, and the administration and their crooked AI funders are going to point to this as a reason to reduce staff even more. Really, the AIr Traffic Controllers and all of the unpaid TSA people should just shut it all down. I don’t think anything will change until they do.

For the rest of us, another good reason not to fly into the US for any reason (not that there weren‘t plenty of good reasons already)
@crispius

The new mayor of #Paris, Emmanuel Grégoire, celebrated his victory last night by riding to city hall on a Vélib' bikeshare bicycle.

He's promised 60,000 new social housing units 15 express bus routes, 1000 new pedestrian streets, completion of bike path network...

Stop using AI, people. I don't care if it makes things easier for you. You're sucking up water, burning the planet, models were trained on stolen data, and you're making the rich even richer. And I didn't even list all of the issues with AI.
I don't normally subscribe to the "German has a word for it" thing because all languages can invent and borrow new words! That said, I can't stop thinking about "hobbyless" as an insult since I saw it a few days ago, so here you go It promotes a growth mindset!! www.tumblr.com/abbiistabbii...
After several months of umm-ing and ahh-ing, I handed in my notice at work this week.

If anyone knows of a Canadian company looking to hire a remote senior web developer who will NOT be working on LLM-related functionality (or be required to use LLM-based development tools), please point me in their direction. I've got 15 years of experience and love getting my teeth into technical problems.

Boosts most welcome. Thanks! #getfedihired
@Moss @SRLevine I’ll second the recommendation for @thetyee and add that @thenarwhal is well worth checking out. I’m a paid subscriber to both, but neither are paywalled.

Well definitely the Panhandle for starters, right?
