Work at the Open Data Institute

Inspired by my trip to Malta last week with EuroGeographics I’ve written a short blog with my reflections on open data from those conversations. I’d love to hear your thoughts too. #opendata #geospatial #datacite

If you love it, let it go? — Open data - Lisaeallen - Medium

I was really privileged to spend this week visiting Malta as a guest speaker for Eurogeographics at their general meeting. The location data community is amazing! They have worked together for years…

Interesting article on TikTok on the recent ban for UK government phones. Like many apps, it is accessing user data from devices, including contacts and geolocation. With the concerns here of who is looking at that data and why.

I’m always amazed at how willing people are to hand over data about them through signing up to apps without understanding what they are giving up. For example when apps ask can we leave the geolocation on all the time or while using the app….

This is an interesting update. The regulation for Meta and WhatsApp privacy regulation is moving to the US. Be interesting to see if it does make a difference.

Went to a really interesting session last night at the Public Law Project on algorithmic transparency in government.

They’ve put together a register of all the algorithms they have identified in government and graded them on how transparent they are. Check out the tool here: Trackautomatedgovernment.org.uk

When we talk about data, trust is a topic that comes up all the time. That makes data assurance a really important topic!

But what is data assurance? At the Open Data Institute we define it as ‘the process, or set of processes, that increase confidence that data will meet a specific need, and that organisations collecting, accessing, using and sharing data are doing so in trustworthy ways’. https://lnkd.in/e46HiuYE

If you’re interested in this topic read our white paper on data assurance
