don’t tell me you can’t go federated viral because this thing did numbers

There has absolutely not been a better opportunity in this century to build a successful new search engine for the internet. The dominant players are running full speed to make their offerings worse, and that’s after *years* of complaints that Google’s results are decaying.

Tech workers, just a reminder that you have all the power at companies and don’t need to deal with this bullshit

Salesforce CEO says he took digital detox before layoffs

Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff told Insider that he took the digital detox — a break from devices — in October and December.

Can we talk about how terrible launching a video game on PC has become? Remember which game market it was in, get inundated with ads, navigate to library (which is never the default view), click “play”, get asked by the game to log into their bullshit proprietary account, then get dumped into a launcher trying to get you to buy more crap, then, finally, launch the actual game.

“What if trying to play a game was even worse than going to a movie theater” is a bold choice

Google has for years wanted to become Facebook - not necessarily a social media site, but a webpage you go to and stay on, so they have a captive audience for ads. The push for AI is entirely about that.

But that is pretty incompatible with what many people use it for - a website to find *other* websites. Because that use is at odds with Google’s revenue strategy it’s gotten much worse at it, and will continue to get worse. There is a huge opportunity for a company to supplant Google as a website search engine because that’s not a thing Google’s revenue strategy will let them be competitive at

Some days I swear that half the time I use clipboard history (WIN + V) just to remember what I was doing
All I want from a search engine is better results than they produced 10 years ago. I don’t really know how to rate bing (before or after AI) on that, but Google today is definitely much worse. It’s pretty amazing how they have ruined their core product
I’m just saying, if I got all 6 infinity stones, DLLs in the GAC are getting a BOGO special.
This isn't a mere overreaction. This is straight-up white nationalism from the College Board. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/02/01/us/college-board-advanced-placement-african-american-studies.html
The College Board Strips Down Its A.P. Curriculum for African American Studies

The official course looks different from a previous draft: No more critical race theory, and the study of contemporary topics — like Black Lives Matter — is optional.

So OpenAI just released a detector of AI-generated text, I assume because of concerns in education / homework.

Maybe this is good?

No, it's very bad.

They claim 26% true positives, 9% false positives. Assume 10% of submitted homework is chatgpt generated, you get the classic counterintuitive outcome of poor predictive power: if a homework is flagged, there's a 3:1 chance it's *human* generated.

This is going to cause a lot of harm. It should be immediately recalled.

New AI classifier for indicating AI-written text

We’re launching a classifier trained to distinguish between AI-written and human-written text.
