I was on strike today, and it wasn't just about the £50,000 plus that I've lost in real terms, or the ever increasing workload, or the deteriorating conditions, or the growing class sizes and ever more complex pupil needs. It was about upholding democracy against the sinister charlatans who have done so much to undermine it and ensuring a fairer future for my children and pupils.

There's a rather charming footbridge over the Mersey at Warrington. The name Mersey conjures up thoughts of heavy industry and the grand romance of Liverpool but here it's genteel, with a rowing club and lush, wooded banks.

The Firth of Forth including the astonishing Victorian railway bridge and the new road bridge with the old road bridge behind it, which now provides a spectacular cycle route into the Kingdom of Fife. Taken on a morning ride from Edinburgh.

The Peene and much smaller
Ryck are in timeless and beautiful Vorpommern (Pomerania). I love spending time there and was able to visit again this year. I hadn't planned to be on, around and in so many rivers in 2022, but seems it was meant to be. In 2023 I'll definitely be doing more.

Looking back at 2023, Rivers were actually the focus of all that was good, and not just in GB. I was able to swim in the Rhein in Basel, the Aare in Bern and the Gryonne near Antagnes. Imagine rivers in major cities that are clean enough to do this. That's what Switzerland is like. It's a tragedy what has been allowed to happen to our beautiful waterways on this septic isle in a sewage ridden sea.

I've always liked rivers but walking along them has become more and more important to me. This year the Clyde, Thames & Mersey, as well as tributaries, have provided the backdrop to wanderings of peace and solace. I love the sense of time & history, as well as the interplay between human endeavour and nature. The pics are the Thames at Erith and Mersey at Warrington.

Warrington town hall is quite something at night. Apparently the gates were due to grace a royal residence but never made it. Paid for by the sweat of the working class of course.
