Using my English degree to write really great Toots and saving them to my drafts.

Daniel Ellsberg, the Pentagon Papers whistleblower, has died.

Henry Kissinger called him the most dangerous man in America. Before Edward Snowden, before Chelsea Manning, and a year before Deep Throat, he revealed that the United States knew it couldn’t win the war in Vietnam. In an attempt to discredit him, Nixon set off the Watergate scandal that led to his own resignation.

The New York Times’ obituary for Ellsberg is free to read.

Daniel Ellsberg, Who Leaked the Pentagon Papers, Is Dead at 92

Deeply disturbed by the accounting of American deceit in Vietnam, he approached The New York Times. The disclosures that followed rocked the nation.

In Fast Company, I argued that it's time for the US and Canada to end right-on-red, a policy that needlessly endangers pedestrians and cyclists.

You asked for it, and it’s coming. Quote posts, search, and groups are on their way. In the meantime, check out the new onboarding experience launching today. https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2023/05/a-new-onboarding-experience-on-mastodon/
A new onboarding experience on Mastodon

Today we’re making signing up on Mastodon easier than ever before. We understand that deciding which Mastodon service provider to kick off your experience with can be confusing. We know this is a completely new concept for many people, since traditionally the platform and the service provider are one and the same. This choice is what makes Mastodon different from existing social networks, but it also presents a unique onboarding challenge. To make this step easier, we now have a default sign-up option that works with a server we operate. If you wish to leave or join a different server, you can do so at any time.

Twitter now disables likes, replies, and retweets if a tweet has Substack links

Twitter’s new API restrictions are causing issues across services, including Substack, Discord, and Flipboard. Twitter also now says it has disabled likes and retweets for new posts with Substack links in them.

Just a reminder that “no ethical consumption under capitalism” is about disadvantaged communities having no choice but to buy things like food or clothes from unethical/unsustainable corporations. Not gamers who want to buy a wizard game.

The reason why retweet-style post creation is important is because it turns every post into a prompt.

Normal people need prompts. And social tools like Mastodon need normal people participating.

time to post again the best user interface i've ever seen
I’ve been around the internet long enough that it really doesn’t come as a surprise but it is still wild that there are people trying to gatekeep Mastodon.
