What a week. Llandudno with #TUCCymru50 then TUC UK #DisabledWorkersConference in Liverpool in the PCS Union delegation now staying on to #TalkAboutDiabetes #TAD2024
I'll be ready for the Bank Holiday by the time Monday arrives!
Technology to manage my diabetes: Digital finger prick meter (BG and Keytones), Libre2 Flash/CGM sensor giving almost real time graphs on my phone and long range avg. Echo Pen 5 to check when my last insulin dose was. Internet to chat with peers in #GBDoc
Sometimes I even resort to the traditional pen and paper numbers logging - oooh and before I had a Libre there was a SpreadSheet for calculating longer term averages and trends.
#DiabetesAwarenessMonth
The 4T's were all there but we had separate other reasons for them until we knew the #t1d was there (End of term tiredness, trying to cut food and lose weight). Biggest thing I remember from the hospital was the annoying cannula, setting off the alarm on the infusion pump every time I bent my arm and being told I either learn to inject or it stays in my arm.
2/3 #GBDoc #DiabetesAwarenessMonth
It's #DiabetesAwarenessMonth so, as a person with #t1d for now almost 4 years, I'll be sharing some of what it is like having a wonky pancreas and an immune system that attacked my own body. Almost like I don't do that for the other 11 months of the year.
And yes, I can eat that!
I'm hosting the #GBDoc Quiz #Halloween special this Thursday (26 Oct) from 8pm.
The quiz happens on Zoom and, whilst it's nice to see our dia-buddies, it's also cool to join quietly with your camera off if you prefer.
#t1d, #t2d, #MODY whatever your flavour it's all good including friends and family with #tFd.
If you want to join the fun and have some #Diabetes #PeerSupport just drop this account a DM.
A reminder that to some a phone is more than just a communication device. As a person with #t1d, I check my blood sugars with my phone. It has alarms if I drift too far in either direction. I record my medication doses on there too.
This means my "phone" is actually a medical device. I *need* it available to keep functioning at my best in work. Having my phone available is a *reasonable adjustment* for my condition.
If you need this too and struggle, talk to your #union rep! #GBDoc #WalesTUC
Great to be at the #JDRF Discovery Day in #Cardiff today. Particularly good to meet Tom from #DiabetesChat and talk #PeerSupport.
Alongside practical examples of talking to people with #t1d who "just get it" I also sneaked in a plug for #GBDoc Weds chat and WhatsApp Groups alongside the #DiabetesChat community session on a Mon.
Love the idea of talking about "Type F Diabetes" (#tFd) for our Families and Friends that are on the journey with us and equally need that Peer Support network.
Why am I up this early on a Saturday? Look, I've spared you for 2 hours until I got on the train. This weekend I'm excited to be heading to #PCSDisabledWorkers Conference in Birmingham. Discussing the rights of #Disabled people in the workplace and meeting fellow #PCS #TradeUnion activists.
Great sgwrs on the Eisteddfod Maes this afternoon as members of many Unions came together to discuss their right to use Welsh in the workplace.
Proud to be there as Chair of the Wales TUC Fforwm y Gymraeg and see PCS, UCAC, UCU, Unite and NUJ represented in the conversation to name just a few.
Lots of work for the Fforwm now to take this forward in the next year alongside the new MoU between Wales TUC and Cymdeithas yr Iaith on supporting the use of Welsh as an active language in the workplace.
Other half ([email protected] - not yet on Mastodon) made a fabulous wholemeal lasagne with #beef mince from @TrewayFarm for tea. Made even better that it included home grown oregano and served with #allotment lettuce.
