Have I mentioned I'm an Ironman?

If you're new to #Mastodon this morning & wondering: 'is it always this slow?"...

Don't worry, the #fediverse is always a bit slow when periodically it has deal with the rush of people escaping from other toxic #socialmedia platforms...

Please be patient, its great here & once the rush dies down we'll be back to normal, just with even more of you.

Welcome to our online community, check out the advice at @feditips & most importantly use hashtags (more than perhaps you used to)!

#Introduction

Hello from Belfast, N Ireland!

I mostly witter about life in general, alongside history / #genealogy / art / small furry animal content. And ducks πŸ¦†

Usually at least one craft / art project on the go, sometimes enthusiastic about baking, love my plants (but try not to get too attached).

Left-leaning, Gen X, socially liberal, fan of well-constructed arguments with actual facts. Use too many exclamation marks & ellipses.

Looking forward to having 500 characters to play with...

We have had a fantastic break in #Sheffield. We caught up with old friends, watched some great live music at the Dorothy Pax, joined a #FaithToFaithless meetup with fellow #apostates, walked in the Peaks, and ate in our favourite restaurants.

Happy with that

I think my 40s can accurately be described as the decade where I perfected the sigh-as-I-sit-down manoeuver
We had a day trip to Guernsey this week. Victor Hugo's house (Hauteville House) was just amazing - highly, highly recommend
Since this platform seems so diverse and accepting, is there a corner for #stammering / #stuttering? I'm a seriously covert stammerer and I've absolutely never talked about it with anyone before and feel it's about time I did because life's too short and I've had a bad few days of dysfluency which surely can't have gone unnoticed by my colleagues and clients and I'm quietly freaking out x 🎈

Here’s a #postcard showing the library at Avery Hill College, This was a teacher training college established by the London County Council in 1906. It merged in 1985 with Thames Polytechnic, which became in 1992 the University of #Greenwich

Its location, Avery Hill House, was originally the home fo john Thomas North, who made a fortune in sodium nitrate, also known as Chile Saltpetre

The #NHS used to be one of the world's most effective #healthcare systems... then the #Tories decided to wreck it:

A new Kings' Fund report, concludes that in international comparisons, the UK's health care is 'middling at best' with the prime cause of the problem a lack of staff.

Moreover, it concludes no particular health care organisation is consistently better than any other, what matters is making the system work properly.

Hiring more staff & paying them well looks to be the answer!
