OpenAI has come out with a new model, which they have dubbed "GPT-4".

The results are genuinely impressive, it can score top marks on advanced placement (AP) tests and reach state of the art on many language model benchmarks.
Sadly, their writeups seem to be missing the number of model parameters and training procedure? Without these, the blog post reads much more like a product ad than a research advance...

GPT-4 is a large multimodal model (accepting image and text inputs, emitting text outputs) that, while less capable than humans in many real-world scenarios, exhibits human-level performance on various professional and academic benchmarks.
What really warms my heart is to see a turn back to the decentralized, democratized Internet that we had all (perhaps naiively) hoped would be the future back in the early 1990's.
Mastodon isn't perfect, but it's a very large step in the right direction for the future. More important is the growing use of ActivityPub and other cross-system data sharing systems. That needs to be encouraged.
